After discussing his options, he chose 20% carbon for a combination of appearance, privacy, glare reduction and heat rejection.

The result completely changed the appearance of the car and worked especially well against the WRX's bright blue exterior.

20% carbon window tint on the side and rear glass.

We consider 20% a good middle-ground percentage.

It provides considerably more privacy than 35%, gives the WRX a much darker and more aggressive appearance and still offers better nighttime visibility for many drivers than extremely dark percentages such as 5%.

For film type, we particularly like carbon film on this vehicle.

Our carbon film provides good heat rejection without the higher price of ceramic.

Ceramic is still available, but because Subaru's windshield-mounted driver-assistance technology can complicate the decision to tint the windshield, carbon can make more sense for WRX owners who aren't going to tint every piece of glass.

That's exactly why the customer featured in this guide ultimately chose carbon instead of ceramic.

The WRX shown in the photos for this guide is a 2026 Subaru WRX tS.

The customer had already used our shop before, so he had experience driving a vehicle with aftermarket tint.

His previous vehicle had 35% tint.

This time he wanted to go darker.

He felt the WRX needed something more aggressive than what he had on his previous vehicle, so he made the jump from 35% to 20%.

His goals weren't limited to one thing.

He wanted:

• Better appearance
• More privacy
• Reduced glare
• Good heat rejection
• A darker overall look
• A tint percentage he could still use as a daily driver

We discussed standard, carbon and ceramic film.

He initially considered ceramic.

After talking through the windshield situation and how he planned to tint the vehicle, we recommended carbon instead of automatically selling him our most expensive option.

We installed 20% carbon on the side and rear glass.

For this particular customer and vehicle, it made the most sense.

The finished appearance is one of the strongest reasons we like 20% on this generation WRX.

The vehicle already has an aggressive design, and the darker glass complements that styling.

On this particular 2026 WRX tS, the combination of the bright blue exterior, darker wheels, black exterior accents and 20% windows tied everything together.

The tint doesn't look like an afterthought.

It looks like it belongs on the vehicle.

This is also a good example of why customers shouldn't judge a tint percentage only by looking at one small piece of film on a display board.

We see this all the time.

A customer looks at 20% or 35% on our tint board and then sees the completed vehicle and says:

"That looks darker than it did on the board."

That's normal.

When you're looking at a tint sample against a lighter background, you're seeing one small piece of film under completely different lighting conditions.

Once that same percentage is installed throughout the vehicle, several windows are reducing the amount of light entering the cabin.

That changes how dark the vehicle appears from the outside.

The exterior color, interior color, weather conditions, direction of sunlight and number of tinted windows can all affect the appearance.

That's why we use the tint board as a reference — not a guarantee of exactly how the completed vehicle will look.

The 20% on this WRX is a perfect example.

Once installed across the vehicle, it produced a much darker and more uniform finished appearance.

Ceramic provides our highest level of heat rejection.

For customers specifically trying to reduce as much solar heat as possible, ceramic is our highest-performing option.

However, maximum heat rejection isn't just about buying ceramic film.

The amount of glass being covered matters too.

That's particularly important on the WRX because of the windshield considerations we'll discuss later.

No.

The 2022–2026 Subaru WRX does not qualify for our $99.99 or $149.99 window tint specials.

One of the main reasons is the amount of glass involved.

The WRX has more individual pieces of glass than the vehicles included in that special.

From the side windows through the rear glass, we're dealing with nine pieces of glass during a complete installation.

More glass means:

• More individual pieces of film
• More cleaning
• More preparation
• More cutting
• More installation time
• More edges and corners
• More opportunities for contamination
• More detailed work

So although it's still a four-door sedan, it isn't priced like a simple seven-window sedan.

For our purposes during a complete side-and-rear tint installation, we're working with nine pieces of glass.

That's one of the details customers may not notice until they really look at the vehicle.

The WRX has the main roll-down door windows along with smaller pieces of glass incorporated into the door areas.

Those smaller windows are part of what makes this vehicle more time-consuming than a traditional four-door sedan.

The individual pieces aren't necessarily extremely difficult for an experienced installer.

It's the combination of all of them that changes the job.

We wouldn't call the WRX one of the hardest vehicles we've ever tinted.

But we also wouldn't call it a beginner vehicle.

From our experience, it falls somewhere in the middle.

An experienced professional should be able to handle it without a problem.

An inexperienced installer can absolutely create problems.

The main four roll-down windows aren't what makes the WRX different.

It's the additional pieces of glass, access around the door panels and smaller quarter-window areas that require more attention.

That's why we consider this a vehicle that should be handled by someone who already knows how to tint.

Small windows can sometimes be more frustrating than large windows.

Customers often assume that because a piece of glass is small, it should be easier.

That's not necessarily true.

With smaller pieces of glass, there is less room to work.

Corners become more important.

Access becomes more important.

Film placement becomes more precise.

If the film doesn't reach far enough into an edge or corner, you can end up with visible daylight.

If the glass isn't cleaned properly, contamination becomes noticeable.

If access is restricted by the interior panel, positioning the film correctly becomes harder.

That's why these smaller pieces of glass contribute to the overall difficulty of the WRX installation.

For this generation WRX, we highly recommend removing the door panels.

That doesn't mean the vehicle is impossible to tint without removing them.

It means removing them gives us better access and allows us to approach the installation the way we prefer.

The shape of the door panel creates an area around the glass that can make complete access more difficult.

This is especially important near the smaller quarter-window areas.

When the panel is out of the way, we have more room to properly clean, position and install the film.

For us, removing a door panel isn't about making the job look more complicated.

It's about access.

The more access we have to the glass, the better we can prepare it.

Window tint installation depends heavily on cleanliness.

Before the film goes onto the glass, we want to remove as much dirt, dust, fibers and other debris as reasonably possible.

If part of the glass is buried behind a panel or difficult to reach, cleaning and installing in that area becomes harder.

Removing the panel allows us to get farther down the glass and gives us more working room around the edges.

That can help reduce:

• Contamination
• Light gaps
• Poor edge coverage
• Film creases
• Difficulty positioning the film

It also reduces the need to force tools and film into areas where the interior panel may be in the way.

Yes, it can be done.

We simply don't consider that the best approach for the way we like to install tint on this vehicle.

Different professional installers have different techniques.

If someone has a method that produces a clean installation without removing the panels, that's their process.

Our preference is based on what gives us the best access to the glass.

After more than 20 years of tinting vehicles, we've learned that having full access to the glass makes our job easier and helps us achieve the finished quality we're looking for.

Any time we're tinting a vehicle, we're working with installation solution around doors, interior trim and electronics.

That means protecting the interior is part of the job.

This is especially important on newer vehicles.

A professional installer needs to understand where solution is going and prevent unnecessary moisture from reaching sensitive areas.

Care also needs to be taken when using heat around interior trim.

One reason we prefer removing panels when appropriate is that it can create better working access instead of forcing film or tools around interior materials.

Quite a bit.

Even though we don't consider the WRX an extremely difficult professional installation, an inexperienced installer can still make plenty of mistakes.

Some of the problems we would watch for include:

• Creasing the film
• Contamination underneath the film
• Visible daylight around edges
• Film not completely covering the glass
• Poorly finished quarter windows
• Uneven top edges
• Interior damage
• Excess installation solution in the wrong areas
• Heat damage from improper heat-gun use

A vehicle doesn't have to be extremely difficult for someone to do a bad job.

Experience matters because the installer knows how to prevent problems before they happen.

One issue we specifically watch for on vehicles with smaller pieces of glass is visible daylight around the film.

If the film isn't positioned correctly or isn't covering enough of the glass, you may see a small clear line around an edge.

That can be especially noticeable once the rest of the glass is dark.

With 20% tint, for example, a clear gap can stand out against the darker film.

Proper access allows us to position the film farther into areas where those edges won't be visible.

Again, this is one of the reasons we like having as much access to the glass as possible.

Cleaning is one of the most important parts of any tint installation.

The film can be cut perfectly and installed perfectly, but if debris is trapped underneath it, the customer may still see contamination.

The WRX's multiple pieces of glass mean the installer has multiple surfaces that need to be properly prepared.

That includes the smaller pieces.

Automotive tint isn't installed in a laboratory clean room, but experience, preparation and access can make a major difference in the final result.

The rear glass itself is relatively straightforward for an experienced installer.

We don't consider it an unusually difficult rear window to shrink.

The film can be prepared and installed without anything too crazy.

There is, however, one area that can make the installation slightly more inconvenient:

the third brake light.

Its position is relatively high, so getting the film into place around that area can require additional care.

It's manageable for an experienced installer, but it's another example of why every vehicle has small details that affect the installation.

Rear-window preparation always requires care around the defroster system.

The installer needs to clean the glass properly without unnecessarily damaging the defroster elements.

This isn't something unique to the WRX, but it's part of professional rear-window tint installation.

We're not simply thinking about getting the film onto the glass.

We're thinking about the vehicle we're working on and what is attached to that glass.

For the side and rear glass, we generally allow approximately:

2 to 2½ hours

That gives us time to properly prepare the vehicle, access the glass, install all of the individual pieces and inspect the finished work.

Some shops may advertise extremely fast installations.

Speed isn't our primary goal.

We want to finish the vehicle in a reasonable amount of time, but we don't want to sacrifice cleanliness or coverage just to say we completed it faster.

For someone asking us for a darker daily-driver percentage, 20% is one of our safest recommendations.

We don't mean "safe" in terms of legality.

We're talking about the balance between appearance, privacy and visibility.

20% is dark enough to noticeably transform the vehicle without immediately jumping into the extremely dark appearance of 5%.

For a customer who wants something lighter, we'd discuss 35%.

For a customer who wants maximum privacy and understands the visibility tradeoffs, we can discuss darker options.

These three percentages create very different vehicles.

35% Tint

35% gives the WRX a cleaner, more subtle tinted appearance.

It's a good option for someone who wants tint but doesn't want the vehicle extremely dark.

It also generally provides easier nighttime visibility than darker percentages.

20% Tint

20% is where the vehicle starts looking significantly darker.

It provides more privacy than 35% and creates a more aggressive exterior appearance.

This is the percentage installed on the 2026 WRX tS featured in this guide.

5% Tint

5% is extremely dark.

It provides much more privacy but comes with a major tradeoff:

nighttime visibility.

If someone isn't already accustomed to very dark film, we generally don't recommend jumping straight to 5% without understanding what they're getting into.

This depends heavily on the driver.

There isn't one answer that applies to everyone.

Eyesight, age, surrounding lighting, weather and where you drive can all change how comfortable a percentage feels at night.

Our customer was already familiar with tint.

He had 35% on his previous vehicle and intentionally decided he wanted to go darker.

For him, moving to 20% was a calculated choice.

For many drivers, 20% remains manageable at night.

There may still be situations where someone chooses to lower a window for better visibility, particularly when backing up, parking or turning in a poorly lit area.

That's very different from 5%, which can become much more challenging at night.

This is an important part of the real-world example.

The customer wasn't unhappy with 35%.

He simply wanted something different for the WRX.

He felt the styling of this vehicle called for a darker appearance.

Because he already knew what 35% looked and felt like, he was in a better position to decide whether he wanted to go darker.

That's different from someone who has never driven a tinted vehicle and immediately chooses one of the darkest percentages available.

When customers aren't sure, we talk through how they use the vehicle before recommending a percentage.

For many 2022–2026 WRX owners, carbon is our preferred recommendation.

That doesn't mean ceramic is bad.

Ceramic is our highest-performing heat-rejection film.

The issue is how much of the vehicle's glass you're actually going to cover.

For maximum heat rejection, we want to address the major areas where solar energy enters the cabin.

That includes:

• Side glass
• Rear glass
• Windshield
• Sunroof or panoramic roof when applicable

If the windshield is going to remain untreated, you're leaving one of the largest pieces of glass on the vehicle without film.

That's why we don't automatically tell every WRX customer to spend more money on ceramic.

The customer originally considered ceramic.

If our only goal were selling the more expensive package, ceramic would have been the easy recommendation.

But that's not how we approach it.

We discussed the Subaru windshield and EyeSight situation.

Because we weren't recommending tinting the windshield, we explained that he wouldn't be covering every major glass area.

He still wanted better heat rejection than standard film.

That made carbon the logical middle ground.

He saved money compared with ceramic and still received a film that provides good heat rejection.

That's why this particular WRX received our $349.99 carbon package.

Yes.

Ceramic film doesn't suddenly stop performing because the windshield isn't tinted.

Ceramic film on the side and rear windows can still reduce heat entering through those specific pieces of glass.

The distinction is whole-cabin performance.

If someone tells us:

"I want the maximum heat rejection possible throughout the entire vehicle."

Then we need to talk about all of the glass.

If the windshield remains untreated, solar energy can still enter through that large area.

That's why we explain the difference instead of simply saying ceramic is always the best choice for every customer.

This is an area where we take a cautious approach.

Many modern Subarus use EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which relies on cameras positioned near the windshield.

Because of that equipment, we generally do not recommend tinting the entire windshield or adding a windshield strip on an EyeSight-equipped Subaru without first confirming compatibility with the specific vehicle and system.

From our installation experience, windshield modifications around Subaru's camera and sensor systems can create concerns about how the driver-assistance equipment sees through the windshield.

Depending on the vehicle and circumstances, warnings or recalibration concerns may also need to be addressed.

Rather than create a potential issue for the customer, our recommendation is generally to leave the windshield alone when we're concerned about interference with the system.

Years ago, choosing window tint was primarily about the glass itself.

Modern vehicles are different.

Now installers also have to think about:

• Cameras
• Sensors
• Driver-assistance systems
• Electronics
• Interior materials
• Windshield-mounted technology

That's why a professional installer shouldn't treat every vehicle exactly the same.

The WRX side and rear windows are straightforward enough for an experienced installer.

The windshield requires more consideration because of the technology surrounding it.

EyeSight is Subaru's driver-assistance technology.

Depending on the model and equipment, these systems can support functions related to vehicle monitoring and driver assistance using cameras positioned around the windshield area.

For a tint installer, the important part isn't diagnosing or repairing EyeSight.

That's not our job.

Our job is recognizing that the technology is there and avoiding modifications we believe could potentially interfere with it.

If a customer wants windshield tint on an EyeSight-equipped Subaru, we recommend researching the exact vehicle and discussing any concerns before moving forward.

No problem.

We can still install ceramic on the side and rear glass.

Some customers simply want our highest-level film regardless of whether the windshield will also be tinted.

That's their choice.

Our responsibility is to explain what they're paying for and what we would personally recommend based on their goals.

If they still choose ceramic after understanding that, we can install it.

We just don't believe in automatically upselling someone when carbon may better fit what they're trying to accomplish.

Here's the simplest way we'd explain the three choices.

Choose Standard if:

• Appearance is the main goal
• Privacy is important
• Glare reduction is important
• Heat rejection isn't a major priority
• You want the lowest-priced full package

Choose Carbon if:

• You want better heat rejection
• You want a strong middle option
• You aren't planning to tint the windshield
• You want better performance without ceramic pricing

Choose Ceramic if:

• Heat rejection is your biggest priority
• You specifically want our highest-performing film
• You're comfortable paying more
• You understand that untreated glass still allows heat into the cabin

For the customer featured here, carbon was the best match.

Not significantly.

The tS may be a more performance-focused version of the WRX, but those performance differences don't fundamentally change how we tint the side and rear glass.

From an installer's standpoint, we're concerned about the glass and interior access.

We're looking at things such as:

• Glass shape
• Number of pieces
• Gasket tightness
• Door-panel access
• Quarter windows
• Electronics
• Rear defrosters
• Brake-light position
• Windshield cameras and sensors

The engine, suspension and performance equipment don't change the basic window tint installation.

So if you own another 2022–2026 WRX trim, much of the installation information in this guide still applies.

Don't choose a shop based only on who says they can finish the car fastest.

Ask questions.

A good shop should be able to explain how they approach the vehicle.

For the WRX, we'd want an installer who understands:

• The additional pieces of side glass
• Quarter-window access
• When door-panel removal may improve access
• Proper interior protection
• Rear-window preparation
• Defroster care
• Windshield-mounted driver-assistance technology

You don't need to become a tint installer yourself.

You just want to know that the person working on your car understands what they're looking at.

We wouldn't recommend it.

There are easier vehicles to learn on.

The WRX isn't impossible, but the number of glass pieces means a beginner has more opportunities to make mistakes.

One crease ruins a piece of film.

One contaminated quarter window stands out.

One light gap can become obvious once the rest of the glass is dark.

And improper use of tools or heat around an interior can cause damage that costs far more than the tint job itself.

This is why professional installation isn't just about putting film on glass.

Tint legality in New Jersey depends on where the film is installed, not whether you're driving a WRX.

The front side windows and windshield are treated differently from the rear portions of the vehicle under New Jersey tint rules.

That means you should understand the law before choosing a setup based entirely on appearance.

A quality tint installation isn't something a customer should expect to replace every year.

The important part is the installation environment, not whether it's raining outside.

Professional automotive window tint is installed from the inside of the vehicle's glass.
