How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car?

Tinting a car can take anywhere from about 1 hour to 3.5 hours or longer depending on the vehicle, number of windows, preparation required and difficulty of the installation. At Dope Tintings in Pennsauken, NJ, a typical four-door sedan with the sides and rear tinted generally takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 3 hours, while larger SUVs and more complicated vehicles can take longer.

But when you're choosing a tint shop, there's something more important than asking:

"How fast can you tint my car?"

A better question is:

"How much time are you going to spend making sure my tint is installed correctly?"

After more than 20 years in the window tint industry and thousands of installations, we've learned that preparation is one of the biggest factors separating a clean window tint installation from a rushed one.

Window tinting isn't a service where faster automatically means better.

In this guide, we'll explain how long different window tint jobs typically take at our Pennsauken tint shop, why some vehicles require considerably more time than others, what happens during the installation, and how long the tint takes to fully cure after you leave.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car?

At Dope Tintings, most automotive window tint installations take approximately 1 to 3.5 hours, depending on the vehicle and what is being tinted.

Here are some of our typical installation times:

Window Tint JobTypical Installation Time
Two front windows1–1.5 hours
Full front windshield1–2 hours
Windshield strip / eyebrow45 minutes–1 hour
Four-door sedan, sides + rear1 hr 45 min–3 hours
Two-door hardtop coupe1.5–2.5 hours
Convertible1.5–3 hours
Midsize SUV, sides + rear2–2.5 hours
Full-size SUV, sides + rear3–3.5 hours
TeslaGenerally longer; model and job specific

These are estimates based on the types of installations we perform at Dope Tintings.

Every vehicle is different.

That's why when someone calls and asks:

"How long will it take to tint my car?"

our first response is usually:

"What are you looking to get done, and what's the year, make and model?"

Why Does the Time to Tint a Car Vary So Much?

The amount of time needed to tint a vehicle depends on much more than how many doors it has.

Factors that can affect installation time include:

  • Year, make and model
  • Number of windows
  • Size and shape of the glass
  • Rear-window difficulty
  • Door-panel and gasket design
  • Vehicle electronics
  • Preparation requirements
  • Existing window tint
  • Condition of the vehicle
  • Type of vehicle
  • Windshield or roof glass being added
  • Overall installation difficulty

Two vehicles that appear similar from the outside can require very different amounts of work.

That's why we don't promise every customer the same installation time.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Four-Door Sedan?

At Dope Tintings, tinting the four doors and rear window of a typical sedan generally takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 3 hours.

The exact time depends on the vehicle.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 2

A straightforward sedan may be toward the shorter end of that range.

A vehicle requiring additional preparation, more difficult glass or more complicated gaskets may take longer.

The goal isn't to beat the clock.

The goal is to install the film correctly.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Two-Door Coupe?

A typical two-door hardtop coupe takes approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours at our shop.

Again, that's an estimate.

Some coupes have large doors, unusual quarter windows or rear glass that requires additional work.

Those differences can affect the installation time.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Convertible?

A convertible can take approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the make and model.

Convertibles can have different glass configurations, seals and access requirements than a traditional hardtop coupe.

We evaluate the actual vehicle rather than assuming every two-door vehicle requires the same amount of time.

How Long Does It Take to Tint an SUV?

It depends on the size of the SUV.

For example, a midsize SUV similar to a Chevrolet Equinox can typically take around 2 to 2.5 hours for the side and rear windows.

A full-size SUV similar to a Chevrolet Suburban can take approximately 3 to 3.5 hours.

Larger vehicles can have:

  • More glass
  • Larger windows
  • Additional quarter windows
  • Larger rear glass
  • More areas requiring preparation

More vehicle generally means more work.

How Long Does It Take to Tint Two Front Windows?

If you're tinting only the two front door windows, the job typically takes us approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

This is a common service for SUV and truck owners who want the two front windows to better match the appearance of the darker factory privacy glass behind them.

Even though it's only two windows, we still take time to properly prepare the glass and gaskets before installing the film.

We don't change our preparation standards simply because the job is smaller.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Front Windshield?

A full front windshield generally takes approximately 1 to 2 hours at Dope Tintings.

The windshield is a large piece of glass, and the specific vehicle can make a major difference.

Modern vehicles can also have:

  • Cameras
  • Sensors
  • Electronics
  • Dashboard components
  • Other areas requiring protection

Proper preparation is important before installing film on a windshield.

If you're considering windshield tint, you should also understand New Jersey's window tint laws. Read our New Jersey Window Tint Laws: Complete Guide.

For pricing information, see How Much Does It Cost to Tint a Car Windshield?.

How Long Does a Windshield Tint Strip Take?

A windshield strip, sometimes called an eyebrow or sun strip, typically takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour at our shop.

Although it's a relatively small piece of film compared with a full windshield, preparation and proper positioning still matter.

We don't believe a smaller job should automatically mean a rushed job.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Tesla?

Teslas generally require more time than many traditional vehicles.

We don't give one universal Tesla installation time because it depends heavily on:

  • Tesla model
  • Windows being tinted
  • Glass configuration
  • Rear glass
  • Preparation requirements
  • Electronics and areas requiring protection

For example, certain Tesla rear-glass installations can require significantly more film and installation work depending on how the customer wants the glass completed.

Teslas are also vehicles where preparation around electronics is especially important.

That's why we prefer to quote the time based on the actual model and requested installation rather than promising a generic two-hour appointment.

Why Does Dope Tintings Take Longer Than Some Tint Shops?

Prep work.

That's the biggest reason.

Anyone can put film onto glass.

The difference between an average tint job and a high-quality installation often comes down to what happened before the film ever touched the window.

We spend additional time preparing areas such as:

  • Glass
  • Window edges
  • Gaskets
  • Seals
  • Areas where film needs to pass during installation

Window tint is extremely sensitive to contamination.

If the preparation isn't right, the installation isn't going to be right.

That's why we're willing to spend additional time before and during the installation.

Why Is Preparation So Important Before Window Tinting?

Window film is being installed directly onto glass.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 4

Anything left between the glass and film can potentially become visible after installation.

That can include:

  • Dirt
  • Dust
  • Hair
  • Fibers
  • Debris
  • Other contamination

Cleaning the obvious center of the window isn't enough.

The edges and gaskets matter too.

As the film is positioned during installation, contamination from surrounding areas can potentially find its way underneath it.

Proper preparation helps reduce that possibility.

For a more detailed explanation of what customers should expect from a professional installation, read our guide on How Much Contamination Is Acceptable in Window Tint?.

Can a Tint Shop Tint a Whole Car in One Hour?

Some shops may advertise extremely fast installation times.

Our position is simple:

Don't choose your tint shop based solely on who promises to finish the fastest.

If somebody tells you they can tint an entire four-door sedan or SUV in approximately one hour, we'd recommend asking how they're accomplishing that time.

Fast doesn't automatically mean bad.

But speed shouldn't come at the expense of:

  • Preparation
  • Cleanliness
  • Proper installation
  • Edge quality
  • Removing installation solution
  • Final inspection

Window tinting isn't an oil change.

You're installing film onto multiple pieces of glass where small installation mistakes can remain visible for years.

Is Faster Window Tinting Better?

Not necessarily.

If two shops produce equally high-quality work and one happens to work faster, there's nothing wrong with that.

The problem occurs when speed becomes more important than quality.

At Dope Tintings, we're not trying to see how many vehicles we can push through the shop in the shortest amount of time.

We want the customer to leave with an installation we're comfortable putting our name behind.

Our philosophy is:

We're a quality tint shop, not a quantity tint shop.

What Can Happen When Window Tint Is Rushed?

Over the years, we've seen customers come in with problems from rushed or poorly prepared installations.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 5

Some of the problems we've encountered include:

  • Excessive contamination
  • Hair underneath the film
  • Fingerprints
  • Creases
  • Poor edges
  • Water that wasn't properly removed
  • Bubbling
  • Film peeling near gaskets
  • Problems when roll-down windows are used

Not every imperfection means an installation was rushed.

Fresh tint also goes through a normal drying and curing process, which we'll explain below.

But a shop shouldn't use curing as an excuse for problems caused by poor preparation or installation.

Why Do We Spend Extra Time Checking the Tint Before You Leave?

We don't want you coming back because of something we could have caught before you left.

After an installation, we inspect our work.

If we find something we're not satisfied with, we'd rather address it before returning the vehicle to the customer.

That extra time can help prevent:

  • Customer inconvenience
  • Return appointments
  • Reinstallation
  • Lost time for the customer
  • Lost time for our shop

A large part of our business comes from repeat customers and referrals.

We believe taking additional time on today's vehicle helps earn tomorrow's customer.

Does Ceramic Window Tint Take Longer to Install?

The type of film isn't necessarily the biggest factor determining installation time.

The vehicle and glass being tinted are generally more important.

For example, adding a ceramic windshield or panoramic roof creates additional work because you're tinting additional glass.

A customer getting ceramic on:

Sides + rear + windshield + panoramic roof

shouldn't expect the same installation time as someone getting only:

Two front windows

If you're considering ceramic primarily for heat rejection, read How Much Does Ceramic Window Tint Cost in New Jersey?.

Does Old Window Tint Make the Job Take Longer?

Yes.

If your vehicle already has aftermarket tint that needs to be removed, expect the job to take longer.

We don't recommend simply installing new film over old aftermarket window tint.

The old film needs to be removed and the glass properly prepared for the new installation.

Removal time depends heavily on the condition of the existing film.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 6

Some film removes relatively easily.

Other film can have:

  • Deteriorated adhesive
  • Multiple layers
  • Extremely old film
  • Film breaking apart during removal
  • Difficult rear-glass removal
  • Defroster considerations

That's why removal time can't always be predicted accurately until we evaluate the existing film.

Can I Wait at the Shop While My Car Is Being Tinted?

Whether waiting makes sense depends on the particular job and expected installation time.

If you're having only two windows tinted, the estimated time may be considerably shorter than a full-size SUV.

For larger or more complicated jobs, dropping the vehicle off may be more convenient.

The important thing is to plan for the realistic installation time, not assume window tinting should always be an in-and-out service.

Can Window Tinting Be Done the Same Day?

Yes. Most normal automotive window tint installations can be completed the same day.

The film does not need to be completely cured before you can take your vehicle home.

That's an important distinction.

There are two different timelines:

Installation time = how long your vehicle is at the shop while we're performing the job.

Curing time = how long the remaining moisture underneath the film takes to completely evaporate after installation.

Your tint continues curing after you leave.

How Long After Tinting Can I Roll My Windows Down?

At Dope Tintings, we instruct customers to keep their roll-down windows up for 24 hours after installation.

Every customer receives a warranty card explaining our aftercare instructions.

Following those instructions is important.

Fresh film needs time to bond properly around the glass and edges.

Rolling the windows down too soon can potentially disturb the film.

We've even seen customers remove the tape placed over their window switches and immediately roll the windows down.

Don't do that.

If your installer tells you to leave the windows up, follow the instructions.

At our shop:

Wait 24 hours.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 7

Why Does Dope Tintings Say 24 Hours When Some Shops Say 3 to 5 Days?

Different tint shops can have different aftercare procedures based on their film, installation process and experience.

At Dope Tintings, our current instruction is 24 hours before operating roll-down windows.

That's the instruction customers should follow when we've installed their tint.

If another shop installed your film, follow that installer's instructions and warranty requirements instead.

How Long Does Window Tint Take to Fully Cure?

Window tint curing time depends heavily on temperature and weather.

At Dope Tintings, based on what we typically observe:

Warm/summer weather: approximately 1 to 2 weeks can be normal.

During extremely hot weather or a heat wave, the process may happen faster.

Cold/freezing winter weather: curing can take a month or potentially longer.

Why?

Automotive window film is installed using a liquid application solution.

Although the installer removes as much solution as possible during installation, some residual moisture can remain between the film and glass.

That moisture needs time to escape.

Cold weather slows that process considerably.

Does Window Tint Take Longer to Cure in Winter?

Yes.

Cold New Jersey winter temperatures can significantly increase tint curing time.

If temperatures are near or below freezing, residual moisture between the film and glass evaporates much more slowly.

That means you may notice moisture pockets for longer during winter than you would during July or August.

Don't compare a January tint installation to an August installation and expect them to cure at exactly the same speed.

Weather matters.

Does Window Tint Cure Faster in Hot Weather?

Generally, warmer conditions can help the remaining installation moisture evaporate more quickly.

During hot summer weather, we've seen film cure considerably faster than during freezing winter conditions.

However, customers should still follow the shop's aftercare instructions regardless of outside temperature.

Don't assume:

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 8

"It's 95 degrees outside, so I can roll my windows down immediately."

Our 24-hour roll-down rule still applies.

Are Bubbles Normal After Window Tinting?

Small moisture pockets can be normal immediately after a fresh window tint installation.

Window film is installed using an application solution.

Even after the film has been properly squeegeed, some residual moisture can remain.

As the film cures, that moisture works its way out.

This is different from permanent contamination, creases or installation defects.

That's why customers shouldn't automatically panic when they see a small moisture pocket shortly after installation.

Give the film time to cure according to your installer's instructions.

Is Haziness Normal After Window Tinting?

Some temporary haziness can occur immediately after installation because of moisture between the film and glass.

At our shop, we often see initial haziness begin clearing relatively quickly—sometimes within the first few hours.

Small moisture pockets can take considerably longer.

Weather plays a major role.

Summer and winter curing times can be completely different.

Should I Push Water Bubbles Out of Fresh Window Tint?

No.

Don't start pushing, squeezing or picking at freshly installed film because you see moisture.

Give it time to cure.

Trying to "fix" something yourself can turn normal curing moisture into actual film damage.

If you're concerned about something you see after installation, contact the tint shop that performed the work rather than trying to repair it yourself.

Can I Wash My Car After Window Tinting?

Yes. You can wash the exterior of your vehicle after the windows have been tinted.

This question comes up constantly.

Many customers assume automotive window film is installed on the outside of the glass.

It isn't.

Automotive window tint is normally installed on the inside of the vehicle's glass.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 9

An exterior car wash therefore isn't washing the tint film itself.

The bigger concern is what happens inside the vehicle.

Can a Car Wash Clean the Inside of My Tinted Windows?

We recommend being careful.

If a car wash or detailer is cleaning the inside of your vehicle, make sure they understand that the windows are tinted and use a tint-safe, ammonia-free glass cleaner.

Don't assume every detailer uses the same product.

At Dope Tintings, customers receive aftercare instructions explaining how we recommend maintaining their newly tinted glass.

Following those instructions also helps protect the film and applicable warranty.

What Should I Use to Clean Tinted Windows?

At Dope Tintings, we recommend using a tint-safe, ammonia-free glass cleaner.

One product we commonly recommend to our customers is Sprayway glass cleaner.

Whatever product you choose, verify that it's appropriate for automotive window film and follow the film manufacturer's and installer's care instructions.

Avoid harsh products that aren't designed for tinted automotive glass.

And be careful about abrasive materials.

You don't want to scratch the film while trying to clean it.

Does My Car Have to Stay at the Tint Shop Until the Film Is Fully Cured?

No. Most vehicles do not need to remain at the tint shop until the window film has completely cured.

If that were necessary, cars tinted during freezing New Jersey weather could potentially sit at a shop for weeks.

That's not how the process works.

For most vehicles:

  1. We complete the installation.
  2. We inspect the work.
  3. The customer receives the vehicle and aftercare instructions.
  4. The film continues curing naturally afterward.

There are exceptions.

Are There Vehicles That Need to Sit Longer After Tinting?

Yes.

Certain vehicles and installations can require additional time before the vehicle is completely reassembled.

We've encountered this with some older Honda CR-Vs and certain Jeep Wranglers, for example.

Depending on the rear-window design, hardware or shocks attached around the glass can interfere with installation.

In those situations, components may need to be removed.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 10

We may then need to allow the film additional time to bond to the glass before reinstalling and tightening hardware against it.

In certain cases, that can mean allowing the vehicle to sit longer or even overnight.

That's not necessary for most vehicles.

It's another example of why window tint installation time is vehicle-specific.

What Should I Do Immediately After Getting My Windows Tinted?

After leaving Dope Tintings, the most important thing is to follow the warranty card and aftercare instructions we give you.

For most customers, that means:

  • Keep roll-down windows up for 24 hours
  • Don't pick at the film
  • Don't push on moisture pockets
  • Allow the film to cure naturally
  • Use tint-safe, ammonia-free cleaner on the inside glass
  • Be careful who cleans the inside of the windows
  • Contact us if something doesn't look right after the appropriate curing period

The installation may be finished when you leave our shop.

The curing process isn't.

How Long Does Window Tint Last After It's Installed?

Installation time and lifespan are completely different questions.

A quality tint job may take several hours to install but can remain on the vehicle for many years when quality film is properly installed and maintained.

Film quality, installation quality, sun exposure, vehicle storage and maintenance can all affect longevity.

We've covered this separately in our guide: How Long Does Tint Last on a Car?.

Is It Worth Waiting Longer for a Better Tint Installation?

We believe so.

Customers sometimes shop for tint by asking two questions:

"How much?"

and

"How fast?"

Price and convenience matter.

But neither tells you whether the installation will actually be good.

When comparing tint shops, we'd recommend also considering:

  • Installer experience
  • Film quality
  • Preparation
  • Cleanliness
  • Warranty
  • Reviews
  • Quality control
  • How the shop handles problems
  • Whether the shop rushes vehicles through

The cheapest and fastest installation isn't necessarily the best value.

If price is also part of your decision, read How Much Does Window Tinting Cost in South Jersey?.

Yes. Most normal automotive window tint installations can be completed the same day. The film continues curing after the customer takes the vehicle home.

Why does window tinting take several hours?

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car? Complete Time Guide — photo 12

Professional window tinting involves more than applying film. The glass and surrounding areas need to be properly prepared and cleaned, the film must be installed carefully, and the completed installation should be inspected before the vehicle is returned to the customer.

Can a whole car be tinted in one hour?

Some shops may work that quickly, but we don't recommend choosing an installer solely because they promise the fastest time. At Dope Tintings, preparation, cleanliness and installation quality take priority over rushing a vehicle through the shop.

How long after tinting can I roll my windows down?

Dope Tintings instructs its customers to wait 24 hours before operating freshly tinted roll-down windows. If another shop installed your tint, follow that shop's specific aftercare instructions.

How long does window tint take to cure?

Based on what we typically observe at our shop, curing can take approximately 1 to 2 weeks during warm weather and a month or potentially longer during very cold or freezing weather.

Does window tint take longer to cure in winter?

Yes. Cold temperatures slow the evaporation of residual installation moisture, so window tint can take considerably longer to fully cure during a New Jersey winter.

Are small bubbles normal after tinting?

Small moisture pockets can be normal during the curing process. They should not automatically be confused with permanent contamination or installation defects. Give the film the appropriate curing time and contact your installer if you're concerned.

Can I wash my car after getting the windows tinted?

Yes. Automotive window film is installed on the inside of the glass, so washing the exterior of the vehicle does not wash the tint itself. Be careful with products used to clean the inside of tinted windows.

What should I use to clean tinted windows?

Use a tint-safe, ammonia-free glass cleaner and follow your installer's aftercare instructions. Dope Tintings commonly recommends Sprayway glass cleaner to its customers.

Does my car need to stay at the shop until the tint fully cures?

Usually not. Most vehicles can leave after installation and quality control, and the film continues curing afterward. Certain vehicle-specific installations may require additional sitting time before removed hardware can be safely reinstalled.

Final Answer: How Long Does It Take to Tint a Car?

Most automotive window tint installations at Dope Tintings take approximately 1 to 3.5 hours, depending on the vehicle, number of windows and installation difficulty.

A typical four-door sedan generally takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 3 hours, while a midsize SUV can take 2 to 2.5 hours and a full-size SUV can take approximately 3 to 3.5 hours.

Smaller jobs can take less time:

  • Two front windows: 1–1.5 hours
  • Full windshield: 1–2 hours
  • Windshield strip: 45 minutes–1 hour

Certain Teslas, complicated vehicles, tint removals and installations requiring additional preparation can take longer.

But don't make your tint-shop decision based solely on who gives you the shortest installation time.

Preparation matters.

Clean glass, clean gaskets, careful film installation and final quality control all take time.

At Dope Tintings, we're not trying to be an in-and-out quantity tint shop.

We're focused on quality.

Once the installation is complete, the tint continues curing after you leave. Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your installer and don't confuse normal curing moisture with an installation problem.

If Dope Tintings installed your tint, keep your roll-down windows up for 24 hours and follow the instructions on your warranty card.
