What Does 20% Front Window Tint Look Like on a 2017–2024 Honda Ridgeline?

Quick Answer: What Does 20% Front Window Tint Look Like on a Honda Ridgeline?

Twenty percent carbon tint gives a Honda Ridgeline’s front windows a close visual match to its factory-tinted rear glass. It completes the appearance of the truck while adding more privacy, glare reduction, and heat rejection for the driver and front passenger.

However, the two front windows may still appear slightly lighter than the factory rear windows because sunlight enters through the untinted windshield. You can also still see into the front cabin during daylight, especially when viewing the truck through the windshield or from certain angles.

This information applies to the 2017 Honda Ridgeline, 2018 Honda Ridgeline, 2019 Honda Ridgeline, 2020 Honda Ridgeline, 2021 Honda Ridgeline, 2022 Honda Ridgeline, 2023 Honda Ridgeline, and 2024 Honda Ridgeline.

What We Tinted on This 2017 Honda Ridgeline

For this real installation, we used:

  • 20% carbon window film
  • Both front door windows
  • Both small front corner windows
  • Black interior
  • Factory-tinted rear door glass
  • No windshield tint

We did not apply additional film over the rear factory glass. The goal was to bring the clear front section closer to the darker appearance of the rear windows.

How Closely Does 20% Match the Factory Rear Glass?

The 20% carbon film matched the factory-tinted rear windows very closely. From the side, the Ridgeline had a much more complete and consistent appearance than it did with clear front windows.

Customers should understand that a film percentage and factory privacy glass may not look identical under every lighting condition. Factory rear glass is manufactured with color inside the glass, while window film is applied to the interior surface of the front windows.

The amount of light entering the cabin also changes how the match appears. Bright sunlight, reflections, viewing angle, interior color, and windshield tint can all affect the final appearance.

Why Can the Front Windows Still Look Lighter?

Even when 20% film closely matches the factory rear percentage, the front windows can appear lighter because the windshield allows a large amount of light into the front cabin.

We have had customers notice this difference when picking up their vehicles and ask why the front windows do not look quite as dark as the rear glass. It does not necessarily mean the wrong percentage was installed.

When nothing is installed on the windshield, more light reaches the dashboard, front seats, and front door windows. That additional light makes the front section easier to see through. The rear section receives less direct cabin light and may appear darker.

The Ridgeline’s black interior helps darken the overall appearance, but it cannot completely offset all the light entering through the windshield.

Can You See Inside a Ridgeline With 20% Front Tint?

Yes. During the daytime, you can still see into the front cabin of this Ridgeline. The untreated windshield and bright outdoor conditions allow enough light inside to make the front seats and interior visible from certain angles.

Twenty percent improves privacy compared with clear glass, but it does not create complete privacy. Depending on the sunlight and viewing angle, the front windows may produce more of a silhouette effect.

Someone outside may be able to tell that a person is inside without clearly identifying every detail. Anyone looking for an extremely dark or nearly blacked-out appearance would need to consider a darker percentage, but darker film creates greater nighttime visibility challenges.

Why Did the Customer Choose 20% Carbon?

The customer wanted a combination of appearance, privacy, glare reduction, and some additional heat rejection.

Honda Ridgelines come with darker factory glass behind the front doors while the two front windows remain clear. Adding 20% to the front section helps eliminate that unfinished contrast and gives the entire side of the truck a more consistent appearance.

Carbon film also provides heat-rejection benefits for the driver and front passenger. The customer did not necessarily need carbon simply to achieve the 20% appearance, but carbon was a worthwhile upgrade for added comfort.

Is 20% Front Window Tint Good for Everyday Driving?

Based on more than 20 years of automotive window tinting experience and over 30,000 completed vehicles, I consider 20% a manageable percentage for everyday driving for many customers.

It provides a noticeable visual change without being as extreme as 5%. During the day, outward visibility through 20% should not be a major problem for a driver with good eyesight.

At night, 20% remains manageable in well-lit areas. Dimly lit streets and parking areas can make it more difficult to see curbs, parking lines, pedestrians, or other objects through the side windows.

When parallel parking in a dark location, some drivers may need to lower a window temporarily. Individual eyesight and previous experience with tinted windows will affect how comfortable the percentage feels.
