What Does 5% Tint Look Like on a 2011–2026 Dodge Durango?
We recently installed 5% standard window film on the front two doors of a 2023 Dodge Durango R/T HEMI at Dope Tintings Automotive Window Tint in Pennsauken, New Jersey. We also installed 20% film over the factory privacy glass on the rear doors and rear cargo glass.
This real installation shows what Dodge Durango owners can expect from a very dark tint setup. Quick Answer: What Does 5% Tint Look Like on a Dodge Durango?
Five-percent tint gives a Dodge Durango an extremely dark appearance and strong daytime privacy. When 5% is installed on the front doors and 20% film is added over the rear factory privacy glass, the front and rear windows can create a close visual match.
On this particular Durango, it was extremely difficult to see inside during the day. However, the customer also chose 20% tint across the full windshield, which allowed less light into the cabin and made the entire vehicle appear even darker.
Although this setup provides substantial privacy, I do not recommend it for first-time tint customers or drivers who are not already comfortable with very dark windows.
The 2023 Dodge Durango R/T Tint Setup
This Durango received:

- 5% standard film on the front two doors
- 20% standard film over the rear factory privacy glass
- 20% standard film on the full windshield
- No carbon or ceramic heat-rejection upgrade
The customer’s main goal was privacy and a complete dark appearance. Heat rejection was not his priority, so he chose standard window film instead of upgrading to carbon or ceramic.
This article focuses on the 5% front doors and the rear-window combination. We cover the windshield separately in our real-world example showing what 20% windshield tint looks like on a 2011–2026 Dodge Durango.
Does 5% Tint Match the Durango’s Rear Factory Glass?
Factory privacy glass on a Dodge Durango is usually lighter than 5% film. Installing 5% only on the front doors would normally make the front windows look darker than the untouched rear windows.
For this installation, we added 20% film over the rear factory privacy glass. That made the rear glass substantially darker and created a close visual match with the 5% front doors.
Based on our experience tinting hundreds of Dodge Durangos, this combination works well for customers seeking an extremely dark, uniform appearance. The exact final darkness can vary because factory privacy glass already reduces visible light before any additional film is installed.
Twenty-percent film over factory privacy glass does not look like ordinary 20% tint installed on clear glass. The factory glass and added film work together, resulting in a much darker finished appearance.

Can You See Inside a Dodge Durango With 5% Tint?
On this Durango, you could not clearly see into the cabin during the day. The 5% front doors created strong side-window privacy, while the 20% film over the rear privacy glass made the rear portion of the SUV extremely dark.
The 20% windshield tint also played a major role. An untinted windshield normally allows a significant amount of daylight into a vehicle, making the cabin easier to see through the side windows. Tinting the windshield reduced that incoming light and made the entire interior appear darker.
The same 5% side-window film may look slightly lighter on a Durango with a clear windshield. Sunlight, cloud cover, viewing angle, interior color, and reflections can also affect what someone sees from outside.
What Does 5% Tint Look Like From Inside?
Five-percent tint is extremely dark when looking through it from inside the vehicle. During a bright day, an experienced driver may still feel comfortable seeing through the front side windows. As daylight disappears, the difference becomes much more noticeable.
In a well-lit area with streetlights, storefronts, and other surrounding light, outward visibility may be manageable for someone accustomed to 5% tint. On a dark road, in a poorly lit parking lot, or during bad weather, seeing through the side windows becomes substantially harder.
Drivers may find themselves rolling down a front window while backing into a parking space, turning onto a dark road, or parallel parking at night.
Is 5% Tint Too Dark for Night Driving?

For many drivers, yes. Five-percent film only allows a small amount of visible light through the film, which can make nighttime visibility difficult.
Based on more than 20 years of window-tinting experience and over 30,000 completed vehicles, I do not recommend 5% front-window tint to the average driver, a first-time tint customer, or anyone unfamiliar with extremely dark windows.
Customers already accustomed to 5% may understand its limitations and feel comfortable adjusting their driving. Someone choosing dark tint for the first time may be surprised by how difficult it is to see into an unlit area.
We advise customers before the installation, but the final decision belongs to the vehicle owner. Our responsibility is to explain both the appearance and the visibility tradeoffs honestly.
Is 5% Tint Good for Everyday Driving?
Five-percent tint can achieve an aggressive appearance and substantial privacy, but those benefits come with major compromises.
This setup may appeal to someone who:
- Prioritizes privacy over nighttime visibility
- Wants an extremely dark and uniform appearance
- Already has experience driving with 5% tint
- Understands that poorly lit areas can become difficult to see
- Accepts the possibility of increased police attention
It is generally not the best choice for someone who:

- Has never owned a vehicle with dark tint
- Frequently drives at night
- Travels on poorly illuminated roads
- Has difficulty seeing in low-light conditions
- Wants a comfortable balance between privacy and visibility
For many everyday drivers who want darkness without going to an extreme, 20% is a more manageable option than 5%.
Is 5% Tint Legal on the Front Doors in New Jersey?
New Jersey generally does not permit aftermarket tint on the front two door windows or full windshield unless the driver and vehicle qualify under the state’s medical sun-screening process.
Drivers should verify current requirements before tinting. A medical condition or doctor’s note should not be treated as automatic approval. The NJMVC requires an application, state authorization, specified documentation, and compliance with its installation requirements.

Would I Recommend This Dodge Durango Tint Setup?
I would recommend this appearance only to a customer who understands extremely dark tint and is already comfortable driving with it. I would not recommend it to a first-time tint customer.
The combination looked excellent on the gray 2023 Dodge Durango R/T. The 5% front doors matched the darkened rear glass very well, and the customer received the strong privacy he wanted.
However, appearance should not be the only consideration. Customers should think carefully about nighttime visibility, rain, dark parking areas, law enforcement attention, and New Jersey’s legal requirements before choosing 5%.
