What Tint Percentage Matches Factory Tint?

Factory privacy glass commonly measures around 18% to 25% VLT on the SUVs, pickup trucks and vans we measure at Dope Tintings. In our experience, 20% or 25% aftermarket window tint usually provides the closest match for the two front doors, but there is no single percentage that matches every vehicle.

If we've tinted that make and model many times, we usually already know which percentage provides a good match. If it's a vehicle we're unfamiliar with, we pull out the tint meter, measure the factory rear privacy glass and choose the closest available film percentage.

Sometimes, but not always.

This is probably the biggest misconception about matching factory tint.

Customers regularly come into our Pennsauken shop and say:

"I need 20% on my two fronts because that's what the factory tint is."

Sometimes they're right.

But we've personally measured factory privacy glass anywhere around 18% to 25% VLT on SUVs, pickup trucks and vans.

VLT means Visible Light Transmission.

The lower the percentage, the darker the glass.

So:

• 18% is darker than 20%
• 20% is darker than 25%
• 25% is lighter than 20%

Those few percentage points can matter when the customer's goal isn't simply getting dark windows—it's getting the two front windows as close as possible to the factory rear glass.

Based on the vehicles we've actually measured and tinted, this is the practical approach we use at Dope Tintings:

This isn't a universal chart saying every vehicle on the road follows these exact numbers.

It's the approach we use based on our tint-meter readings and more than 20 years of working with different vehicles.

The actual vehicle still matters.

At Dope Tintings, we would normally use 25%, not 20%, if the factory rear privacy glass meters around 23%.

This is an important distinction.

20% would actually be darker than 23%.

If we're trying to create the closest possible match, putting 20% on the two front doors could make the fronts slightly darker than the factory rear glass.

25% is closer to the actual factory reading.

That's why we don't automatically install 20% every time someone says:

"Match my factory tint."

We match the vehicle—not a generic number from the internet.

If the factory rear privacy glass meters approximately 18% to 20%, then 20% aftermarket film is normally our starting point for the two front doors.

This is also where experience with specific vehicles helps.

Because we've tinted so many SUVs and pickups over the years, there are vehicles we can look at and already have a good idea of which percentage will provide the match the customer wants.

We don't necessarily need to meter every vehicle we've seen countless times.

But if it's unfamiliar or we're unsure, we'll meter it rather than guess.

A tint meter gives us the actual visible-light transmission through the glass.

That's more useful than looking at a rear window and saying:

"That looks like 20%."

Imagine an unfamiliar SUV comes into the shop.

By eye, the factory rear glass looks somewhere around 20%.

We meter it and get 23%.

Now we know that our 25% film is likely a better starting point than automatically installing 20%.

That small measurement can make the difference between:

"That's really close."

and:

"Why do my two front windows look darker than the back?"

This surprises some customers.

We can install a percentage that's extremely close to the factory rear glass, and the two front windows may still appear lighter from certain angles.

The biggest reason is usually the windshield.

If the windshield is untreated, a large amount of daylight enters the front cabin.

That light illuminates the:

• Driver
• Front passenger
• Dashboard
• Front seats

When you're standing outside looking through the front doors, you're looking into a much brighter part of the vehicle.

The rear cabin is usually darker.

So what looks like a tint-percentage mismatch may actually be a lighting difference inside the vehicle.

Yes.

A sunroof or panoramic roof can introduce even more light into the cabin.

If the panoramic shade is open and sunlight is coming through both the windshield and roof, the front portion of the vehicle can look significantly brighter.

That doesn't automatically mean the wrong tint percentage was installed.

Close the panoramic shade or move the vehicle into different lighting and the visual match may look different.

Interior color can contribute, although in our experience it's usually not as significant as the amount of light entering through the windshield and roof.

A light-gray, beige or tan interior can reflect more light than a black interior.

That can make the glass appear lighter from outside.

This is another reason we don't promise that a matched vehicle will look exactly the same in:

• Direct sunlight
• Cloudy weather
• Shade
• Photographs
• Different viewing angles

The film percentage doesn't change.

The lighting around and inside the vehicle does.

We can normally get the darkness very close.

But factory privacy glass and aftermarket window tint are different products.

Factory privacy glass gets its darker appearance from the glass itself.

Aftermarket tint is a film applied to the glass.

If a customer specifically asks:

"Can you match the exact factory color too?"

we explain that no tint shop can honestly guarantee a perfect color match.

Different vehicle manufacturers can use glass with different tones.

Different window-film manufacturers can also produce films with slightly different tones.

Our goal is to get the VLT and overall darkness as close as possible.

For most customers simply wanting their two front windows to look uniform with the rear, that's what matters most.

It can, because not every film line is available in every percentage.

At Dope Tintings, our 20% shade is available in Standard, Carbon and Ceramic.

That gives a customer whose factory glass meters around 18%–20% several options.

Our 25% shade is currently available in Carbon.

So if the factory rear privacy glass meters around 23% and we determine 25% is the closest match, Carbon is the film we'd normally discuss.

We intentionally don't carry every possible percentage in every possible film line.

Too many overlapping options can make choosing tint unnecessarily confusing.

Then we're making two separate decisions.

First:

What percentage matches the factory rear glass?

Second:

What do you want the film to do?

If your factory rear glass meters around 18%–20%, we may recommend 20% on the two front doors.

From there:

20% Standard makes sense if your main priority is appearance and privacy.

20% Carbon is our usual recommendation if you want the factory-match appearance plus better heat rejection.

20% Ceramic is an option when higher heat-rejection performance is particularly important to you.

The darkness can remain similar while the performance of the film changes.

Matching darkness and matching performance are two different things.

Imagine an SUV with factory privacy glass measuring approximately 20% behind the driver.

We install 20% Carbon or Ceramic on the two front doors.

From outside, the darkness may look very close.

But that doesn't mean the factory rear privacy glass and aftermarket front film reject the same amount of solar heat.

Factory privacy glass and aftermarket performance film are different products.

If your goal is simply to make your SUV or pickup look more uniform, yes, that's a very common installation.

Many vehicles come from the manufacturer looking like:

Clear-looking front doors → darker factory rear privacy glass.

A lot of customers simply don't like that appearance.

They come to us and say:

"Make the two fronts match the back."

That's one of the most common two-window jobs we perform.

If appearance is your only goal, there's no reason to turn that simple request into something more complicated.

If heat rejection or additional UV performance is also important, then we'll discuss whether treating other glass makes sense.

Usually not when we're talking about the dark rear glass that came from the manufacturer on an SUV, pickup or van.

That's normally factory privacy glass.

The darkness is manufactured into the glass itself.

There isn't necessarily a piece of film for us to peel off.

Aftermarket film can be installed over factory privacy glass if the customer wants additional darkness or performance.

Sometimes. In our experience, factory privacy glass commonly measures around 18%–25% VLT. We generally use 20% when the rear glass measures around 18%–20% and 25% when it measures around 22%–25%.

If the installer doesn't already know the vehicle's typical factory-glass percentage, yes. At Dope Tintings, we meter unfamiliar vehicles instead of assuming every factory rear window is 20%.

Light entering through the untreated windshield can illuminate the front cabin and make correctly matched front windows appear lighter. An open sunroof or panoramic roof can increase that effect.

We can get the darkness very close, but an exact color match cannot be guaranteed. Factory-darkened glass and aftermarket film are different products and may have slightly different tones.

If your factory rear glass measures around 18%–20%, 20% Carbon is our usual recommendation when you want a close visual match plus better heat rejection. If the factory glass is closer to 22%–25%, the closest darkness match may instead be our 25% Carbon.

We prefer approximately 25% because it's closer to the actual factory VLT and avoids intentionally making the two front doors darker than the rear.

The goal isn't to use the percentage everybody on the internet calls "factory tint."

The goal is to match your actual vehicle as closely as possible.
