The front doors received 5% film because they originally had clear glass. The rear section already had factory privacy glass, so applying 20% film over it created a considerably darker finished result.

Privacy was the customer’s main goal. He was not looking for maximum heat rejection and did not plan to tint the windshield.

He wanted the front and rear sections to have a consistently dark appearance instead of leaving the front doors noticeably lighter than the factory rear glass. Installing 5% on the fronts and layering 20% over the rear glass created the dark look he requested.

The 5% front windows looked noticeably dark during daylight and made it difficult to see inside. Depending on the viewing angle, an outside observer might see a silhouette or be unable to see through the glass at all.

Its appearance can change based on:

Exterior paint color does not determine how light or dark tint appears. The interior color and available light entering the cabin have a much greater effect.

Applying 20% film over the Gladiator’s factory privacy glass produced a blacked-out appearance across the rear doors, quarter windows, and sliding back window. Visually, it flowed well with the 5% front windows.

That does not guarantee that the rear glass will measure exactly 5% on a tint meter. Factory privacy glass already reduces visible light before the aftermarket film is added, and its original measurement can vary between vehicles.

A finished reading depends on both layers:

• The original factory privacy glass
• The 20% aftermarket film installed over it

During daylight, the driver can generally see through 5% because the outside light helps illuminate the surroundings. Nighttime visibility is considerably more challenging.

The driver may have difficulty seeing through the front doors when:
