A 5% tint setup gives a Ram 1500 a nearly blacked-out appearance when viewed through the sides and rear. On this real customer’s Forged Blue Metallic 2026 Ram 1500 Big Horn, Dope Tintings installed 5% carbon film on the two clear front doors and 20% carbon over the factory-tinted rear glass.

The two different percentages created a closely matched dark appearance across the entire cab. During daylight, it was difficult to identify the driver through the side windows, while the untreated windshield still allowed more light into the black interior.

This actual Pennsauken customer installation included:

• 5% carbon film on the driver-side front door
• 5% carbon film on the passenger-side front door
• 20% carbon film over both factory-tinted rear doors
• 20% carbon film over the factory-tinted rear window
• Windshield left untreated

The customer plans to return for a separate windshield installation after receiving his tags and completing his vehicle inspection. That future installation will be covered in its own article because windshield tint changes the appearance and visibility of the entire cab.

This was the customer’s first installation with Dope Tintings, but he already knew that he wanted the entire truck to look close to 5%.

His goals included:

• Maximum privacy through the sides and rear
• A blacked-out exterior appearance
• Reduced sunlight and glare
• Heat rejection from carbon film
• A consistent front-to-rear finish
• Tint that complemented the Forged Blue Metallic paint

The dark glass worked especially well with the truck’s black wheels, black interior, dark exterior accents, and deep blue-gray body color. When the installation was finished, the customer said the result was exactly what he wanted.

The front doors originally had clear glass, so 5% carbon film was installed to create the desired darkness. The rear doors and three-piece back window already contained factory privacy glass.

Installing 5% over the factory-tinted rear glass would have made the rear section significantly darker than the front doors. Instead, we added 20% carbon film over the factory glass to create a finished appearance that visually matched the 5% front windows more closely.

This is an appearance match rather than a guaranteed tint-meter match. The final visible-light transmission depends on the darkness of the original factory glass and the measured transmission of the aftermarket film.

It is difficult to see inside through the side and rear windows during daylight. The combination of dark carbon film and the black interior creates a blacked-out appearance rather than the lighter silhouette commonly seen with 15% or 20% film.

Someone viewing the truck through the untreated windshield may still see the driver because sunlight enters through the front glass. From the sides, however, the driver is much harder to identify.

The rear seating area is even more difficult to see because the rear doors and back window combine aftermarket film with factory privacy glass.

During daylight, visibility through the 5% front windows remains manageable because the available sunlight helps the driver see vehicles, road markings, and surrounding objects.

At night, the experience changes significantly. Five-percent film limits the amount of light reaching the driver and can make it difficult to see through the front doors in dim parking lots, residential streets, or other poorly illuminated areas.

The rear doors and back window produce a similarly dark outward view. Lowering the front windows may be necessary when backing into a parking space or checking for curbs and nearby objects after dark.

We do not recommend this setup for first-time tint customers or drivers who have never used dark window film.

Five-percent tint is better suited to someone who:

• Has previous experience driving with dark tint
• Prioritizes privacy over nighttime visibility
• Understands that parking can be challenging after dark
• Is comfortable lowering the windows when necessary
• Frequently drives in well-lit areas

The customer left the windshield untreated because he wanted to receive his tags and complete the inspection process before returning. Adding windshield film later will reduce the light entering the cab and may make the truck appear even darker from outside.

Does 20% film over factory rear glass measure exactly 5%?
Not necessarily. It created a close visual match on this truck, but the final reading depends on the original factory glass and the film’s measured transmission.

Does the factory rear tint need to be removed first?
No. Factory privacy glass contains color within the glass and cannot be peeled off like aftermarket film. The 20% carbon film was installed over it.

Is carbon film darker than standard or ceramic film?
Film construction does not determine darkness. The selected percentage controls the shade, while the film type affects qualities such as heat rejection, construction, and warranty.

How long should the front windows remain closed after tinting?
Keep the windows rolled up for at least 24 hours. Temporary moisture, haze, or small water pockets can remain visible while the film cures.
