What Does 5% Tint Look Like on a 2007β2015 Mazda CX-9?
See what 5% tint looks like on a 2007β2015 Mazda CX-9. This silver 2010 CX-9 received 5% Ceramic on the front doors and 15% Ceramic over the factory rear privacy glass for an approximately 5% look across the sides and back.

This is what 5% tint looks like on a 2007β2015 Mazda CX-9, installed at Dope Tintings in Pennsauken, NJ. We've been installing automotive window tint for more than 20 years and have worked on more than 30,000 vehicles.
This particular vehicle was a silver 2010 Mazda CX-9 with a black interior. The customer came to us from the Willingboro, NJ area β one of many South Jersey communities we serve β wanting the entire vehicle tinted with Ceramic film for maximum heat rejection, along with a very dark and consistent appearance.
For the sides and back, we installed 5% Ceramic on the two front doors and 15% Ceramic over the existing factory privacy glass on the rear windows and back window. The factory rear glass was around 35%, and adding 15% film brought the finished rear section to around the 5% range, giving the CX-9 a consistent dark appearance from front to back.
What 5% Tint Looks Like on a 2007β2015 Mazda CX-9
On this silver Mazda CX-9, the finished 5% look is extremely dark from outside.
The contrast between the silver exterior and dark windows makes the tint especially noticeable. With the black interior behind the glass, it's also difficult to see into the vehicle under many daytime lighting conditions.
One of the most important things to notice in the photos is how consistent the side windows look.
The front doors started with clear glass, so we installed 5% Ceramic directly on the two front windows.
The rear portion of the CX-9 was different because those windows already had factory privacy glass. Instead of putting 5% film over already-dark glass, we installed 15% Ceramic over the factory rear privacy glass, bringing the finished appearance to around the 5% range.
The result is a dark, consistent appearance across the sides and back of the SUV.

Why Did We Choose 5% for This Mazda CX-9?
The customer specifically wanted the 5% look.
His reasons included privacy, appearance, and making it much more difficult to see inside the vehicle from outside.
He also wanted Ceramic film throughout the CX-9 because maximum heat rejection was his main reason for choosing the film package.
Those are two separate choices.
The 5% shade was primarily about darkness, privacy, and appearance, while the Ceramic package was primarily about heat rejection.
This is important because choosing a darker tint percentage doesn't automatically mean you're getting the highest heat rejection. The percentage and film package serve different purposes.
For this CX-9, the customer wanted both: an extremely dark appearance and our highest heat-rejection film package.

How We Match Factory Privacy Glass on a Mazda CX-9
SUV owners sometimes ask why we don't simply install the same film percentage on every window when they want everything to look the same.
The reason is factory privacy glass.
The rear doors, quarter windows, and back window on this Mazda CX-9 were already darkened from the factory at around 35%.
If we installed the same 5% film used on the clear front doors over that already-dark rear glass, the rear section would become considerably darker than the fronts.
Instead, we installed 15% Ceramic over the approximately 35% factory rear privacy glass.
That brought the finished rear section to around the 5% range, allowing it to visually blend with the 5% Ceramic installed on the two front doors.
Factory privacy glass can vary from vehicle to vehicle, so we don't assume every SUV has exactly the same factory percentage. We look at the particular vehicle and choose the film percentage based on the finished appearance the customer wants.
If your CX-9 already has old aftermarket tint that needs to come off before we install new film, our tint removal service starts at $74.99. See our tint removal service.

Does 5% Tint Make It Hard to See at Night?
Yes. 5% tint is extremely dark, and nighttime visibility is significantly reduced compared with lighter percentages such as 20% or 35%.
That's something we discuss with customers before installing 5% on front door windows.
During the daytime, visibility from inside can be much better than someone might expect after looking at the vehicle from outside. At night, however, there is much less available light passing through the glass.
Dark roads, poorly lit parking lots, rain, and other low-light conditions can make the difference much more noticeable.
Customers who do a lot of nighttime driving and are concerned about visibility should seriously consider a lighter percentage.
For this customer, however, maximum privacy and the 5% appearance were intentional choices.

What Are the Window Tint Laws in New Jersey for an SUV?
New Jersey has different window tint rules depending on which windows of an SUV are being tinted.
The rules affecting the front side windows are different from the rear windows behind the driver, which is especially important on SUVs like the Mazda CX-9 that already have factory privacy glass in the rear.
A 5% front-window setup should not be assumed to be legal simply because the rear windows have a similar dark appearance.

This CX-9 also received a separately installed 35% Ceramic full windshield tint. Because windshield tint has its own visibility, pricing, and legal considerations, we covered that installation separately rather than combining everything into one article.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Mazda CX-9?
For the sides and back window on this 2007β2015 Mazda CX-9, installation takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.
That includes the two front doors along with applying film over the factory privacy glass on the rear portion of the SUV.
Installation time can vary depending on the vehicle's condition and our schedule.
The windshield is a separate installation. On this particular CX-9, the 35% Ceramic full windshield took approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
How Much Does It Cost to Tint a Mazda CX-9 in South Jersey?
For the sides and back window on a 2007β2015 Mazda CX-9, our current pricing is:
| Film Package | Sides + Back Window | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $274.99 | Appearance, privacy, UV blocking |
| Carbon | $349.99 | Everything in Standard + significant heat rejection |
| Ceramic | $449.99 | Everything in Carbon + maximum heat and UV blocking |
The customer featured in this article chose the Ceramic package for $449.99.
That included 5% Ceramic on the two front doors and 15% Ceramic over the factory privacy glass on the rear portion of the vehicle.
The customer's main reason for choosing Ceramic was maximum heat rejection throughout the vehicle.
Standard is the right choice for customers focused on appearance and reducing visible light. Carbon adds meaningful heat rejection over Standard. Ceramic is our top package β on a dark SUV in a South Jersey summer, the difference in cabin temperature is immediately noticeable.
All film packages include a manufacturer warranty.
The 35% Ceramic windshield was a separate service priced at $224.99, bringing this customer's total job to $673.98 for a fully tinted CX-9 in Ceramic film. You can see the windshield installation in our 35% windshield tint article for this CX-9.
Because the Mazda CX-9 is an SUV, it does not qualify for our sedan/coupe-only $99 complete-vehicle tinting special.
If you only want the two front windows done, our two-front window tinting starts at $124.99.

Mazda CX-9 Window Tinting in South Jersey
If you're searching for Mazda CX-9 window tinting near me in South Jersey, Dope Tintings is located in Pennsauken, NJ and serves customers from Cherry Hill, Camden, Maple Shade, Cinnaminson, Moorestown, Mount Laurel, Marlton, Delran, Haddonfield, Collingswood, Voorhees, Willingboro, and surrounding communities throughout Camden and Burlington Counties.
This customer traveled to us from the Willingboro area looking for a very specific finished result: a dark 5% appearance across the sides and rear combined with Ceramic film for maximum heat rejection.
Because the front and rear glass started at different levels of darkness, achieving that look required using different film percentages.
We installed 5% Ceramic on the clear front doors and 15% Ceramic over the approximately 35% factory rear privacy glass, bringing the rear section to around the 5% range.
That's why we recommend telling us the finished appearance you want rather than assuming the exact same film percentage needs to go on every window.
For customers who want to match factory privacy glass instead of making the rear glass darker, we can also recommend lighter percentages based on the particular vehicle.
