This black 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander received 5% Carbon tint on the two front doors and 20% Carbon over the factory-tinted rear glass. The factory rear privacy glass measured approximately 19%, and the completed rear combination metered around 5%.

That real measured result allowed the rear section to coordinate closely with the 5% Carbon installed on the clear front windows. The customer wanted maximum privacy, a strong blackout appearance, and improved heat rejection.

This was approximately the fifth vehicle Dope Tintings has completed for her, and she was already accustomed to driving with 5% tint.

This returning South Jersey customer wanted the Outlander to have an extremely dark appearance across the complete sides and rear. Privacy and appearance were both important, and she was already familiar with the nighttime tradeoffs of 5%.

She selected Carbon because she also wanted improved heat rejection but did not want to pay the additional price for Ceramic. Carbon provided the performance upgrade that matched her current goals and budget.

The complete installation included:

• 5% Carbon film on the two front roll-down windows
• 20% Carbon film over the factory-tinted rear roll-down windows
• 20% Carbon film over the fixed rear quarter windows
• 20% Carbon film over the factory-tinted back window
• No fixed windows on the two front doors
• No film on the front windshield

The goal was not to apply the same film percentage to every piece of glass. The goal was to create a similar finished appearance across glass that started at different factory light levels.

The front doors began with clear automotive glass, so they received 5% film. The rear section already had factory privacy glass, so applying 5% over those windows would have produced a much darker rear combination than we needed to coordinate with the 5% front setup.

Instead, we used 20% Carbon over the factory rear glass. The completed rear combination metered around 5%, producing the dark and coordinated result the customer wanted.

The customer plans to return for windshield tinting later. She wanted to experience the current sides-and-rear setup first before deciding which windshield percentage would work best for her.

That is a practical approach for someone making a vehicle extremely dark. Tinting the sides and rear first allows her to evaluate the nighttime experience before adding film to the glass responsible for her forward view.

We measured the Outlander’s factory rear privacy glass at approximately 19% VLT. After installing 20% Carbon over that glass, the completed rear section metered around 5%.

That finished meter reading is more useful than relying only on the percentages printed on film packaging.

A film marketed as 20% may not measure exactly 20.00%. The actual VLT can vary slightly according to the specific film and manufacturer. Factory privacy glass can also meter differently from one vehicle to another.

For that reason, the percentages should not simply be multiplied to declare the exact finished VLT of an actual installation. The meter provides the real result after the film and glass are working together.

On this Outlander, the real measurements were:

• Factory rear privacy glass: approximately 19%
• Film installed over the rear glass: 20% Carbon
• Completed rear combination: approximately 5%
• Film installed on the clear front windows: 5% Carbon

From outside during daylight, the transition between the newly tinted front windows and the darkened rear section looked even. The combination gave the vehicle a strong blackout appearance from multiple angles.

The driver was difficult to identify through the front side glass. Depending on the viewing angle and the amount of light entering the cabin, someone outside might detect a silhouette, but the interior was mostly hidden.

The Outlander’s black interior also supported the dark exterior appearance because there were fewer light-colored cabin surfaces visible through the film. Its black exterior completed the overall dark style, although exterior paint color did not change the film percentage or measured VLT.

The front windshield remained untreated. Daylight entering through that glass could make limited interior detail more visible from certain angles. The same windows could appear nearly black from one position and reveal a slight silhouette from another.

This installation demonstrates why an experienced tint shop should consider the actual factory-glass measurement and desired finished result instead of blindly choosing an overlay percentage based only on the number printed on the film box.

During daylight, the view through the 5% front side windows was considerably clearer from inside the Outlander than the blackout exterior appearance might suggest. Bright outdoor conditions provided enough surrounding light for vehicles and other objects to remain visible through the treated glass.

Nighttime requires more caution.

In a dark parking lot, residential area, or another location with limited lighting, 5% can make it difficult to see objects through the side windows. A driver may need to lower the windows while parking or maneuvering in especially dark conditions.

We generally do not recommend 5% front-window tint for someone receiving dark automotive tint for the first time. Familiarity with the percentage is important because daytime visibility does not demonstrate how the same film will perform at night.

This customer was already experienced with 5% and understood what to expect. That experience is one reason this setup was appropriate for her.

She was happy with the completed Outlander, just as she had been with the previous vehicles we tinted for her. Her continued return to Dope Tintings—now for approximately her fifth vehicle—reflects the relationship we have developed through consistent installation quality.

The front windshield remains untreated. Once she has spent time driving with the current sides-and-rear setup, she can make a more informed decision about whether to tint the windshield and which percentage fits her preferences and driving habits.

If she returns for the windshield, that installation can be documented separately because windshield percentage and forward visibility involve a different decision from tinting the sides and rear.
