What Does 5% Carbon Tint Look Like on a 2021–2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee L?
This black Jeep Grand Cherokee L received 5% Carbon tint on the front windows and 15% over its factory rear privacy glass for a coordinated blackout appearance.

This black Jeep Grand Cherokee L received 5% Carbon tint on the two front windows and 15% Carbon over the factory-tinted rear glass at our Pennsauken, NJ shop. The customer’s primary goal was maximum privacy and a coordinated blackout appearance across the sides and rear.
Because this Grand Cherokee L had factory rear privacy glass measuring approximately 25%, we selected 15% film for the rear section instead of our more common 20% factory-overlay option. On this particular vehicle, the 15% rear film created a closer visual match with the 5% front windows.
Why Use 5% on the Front and 15% Over the Factory Rear Glass?
This installation was designed around the factory glass already present on the Grand Cherokee L.
We installed:
- 5% Carbon on the driver-side front roll-down window
- 5% Carbon on the passenger-side front roll-down window
- 15% Carbon over the rear roll-down windows
- 15% Carbon over the fixed rear quarter windows
- 15% Carbon over the rear hatch glass

The two front doors do not have additional fixed windows beside the side mirrors. The rear section includes the main roll-down windows, fixed quarter glass and rear hatch.
The factory rear privacy glass on this particular Grand Cherokee L was approximately 25%. If we had automatically installed the same overlay percentage we use on every SUV, the front and rear sections would not have produced the visual balance we wanted.
Based on our experience matching this vehicle, 15% over its factory rear glass produced a closer blackout appearance with the 5% front windows. The goal was not to use the same film percentage on every piece of glass. The goal was to make the completed vehicle look consistent.
As a simple theoretical example, 15% film installed over glass measuring approximately 25% would transmit roughly 3.75% of the original visible light:
0.15 × 0.25 = 0.0375, or approximately 3.75% combined VLT
Actual measured VLT can vary because factory glass and aftermarket film do not always measure exactly at their labeled percentages. However, this calculation helps explain why the combination visually coordinated so well with the 5% front windows.

Factory privacy glass can vary between vehicles. That is why we evaluate the existing rear glass and the customer’s desired result instead of assuming one overlay percentage will create the same appearance on every SUV.
This customer specifically wanted maximum privacy and a blackout appearance. He selected Carbon film for the entire sides-and-rear installation, giving him the dark appearance he requested along with improved heat rejection compared with our Standard package.

What Did This Grand Cherokee L Blackout Setup Look Like During the Day?
From outside, the combination of 5% front tint and 15% over the factory rear privacy glass gave this Grand Cherokee L a strong blackout appearance.
The black exterior and black interior created a coordinated overall look, but the darkness of the film was determined by the tint setup rather than the vehicle’s paint color. The dark interior also made it more difficult to identify details inside the cabin.

In several photographs, sunlight was shining directly through the untreated windshield. That incoming light brightened the front of the cabin and made portions of the interior more visible than they would have been from another angle.
The customer noticed this when he arrived to pick up the vehicle. He initially questioned why the windows appeared slightly lighter than expected.
We explained that the vehicle was parked with strong sunlight entering directly through the windshield. The film had not changed, and the installation was not lighter than requested. The sunlight was illuminating the cabin from the front, making more interior detail visible through the side glass.
Once we explained how the windshield light and viewing angle affected the appearance, he understood what he was seeing and was happy with the completed vehicle.
From other angles, especially where the sun was not directly illuminating the cabin, the interior was extremely difficult to see. The rear section produced a strong blackout appearance with very little visible detail.
The front windows could reveal a slight silhouette from certain positions, but that depended on:

- The viewing angle
- Direct sunlight
- Windshield light
- Reflections on the glass
- The observer’s position around the vehicle
This real installation demonstrates why the same tint can look blacked out in one photograph and slightly lighter in another. The film percentage remains the same, but the lighting around and inside the vehicle changes.
Is This 5% Grand Cherokee L Setup Easy to See Through at Night?
During daylight, the view through the 5% front windows was considerably clearer from inside the vehicle than the blackout exterior appearance might suggest. Bright outdoor conditions provided enough surrounding light for vehicles and other objects to remain visible through the treated glass.
Nighttime is different.
The 5% front windows can become difficult to see through when the vehicle enters an area with limited exterior lighting. Parking, backing into a space, checking a curb or making a turn on a dark street may require the driver to lower a window.

For that reason, we do not recommend 5% front-window tint for someone receiving automotive window tint for the first time. The blackout appearance may look great from outside, but the nighttime visibility tradeoff is significant.
We generally recommend this type of setup only for someone who is already accustomed to driving with extremely dark film and understands what to expect after sunset.
