What Does 35% Windshield Tint Look Like on a 2007–2015 Mazda CX-9?

This is what 35% windshield tint looks like on a 2007–2015 Mazda CX-9, installed at Dope Tintings in Pennsauken, NJ. We've been installing automotive window tint for more than 20 years and have worked on more than 30,000 vehicles.

This particular vehicle was a silver 2010 Mazda CX-9 with a black interior. The customer came to us from the Willingboro, NJ area β€” one of many South Jersey communities we serve β€” and chose 35% Ceramic window film on the full front windshield.

He originally considered going considerably darker with 20% on the windshield, but nighttime visibility was important to him. After discussing the difference, he decided 35% gave him the better combination of heat rejection, glare reduction, appearance, privacy, and nighttime visibility.

What 35% Windshield Tint Looks Like on a 2007–2015 Mazda CX-9

On this silver Mazda CX-9, 35% gives the full windshield a noticeably darker appearance from outside without looking nearly as dark from inside the vehicle.

From the front of the CX-9, the windshield has a smoked appearance that significantly changes the overall look of the SUV. The black interior also contributes to how dark the windshield appears when you're looking into the vehicle from outside.

The interior photos from this installation show the other side of the equation.

When you're sitting inside the CX-9 and looking through the 35% windshield during the daytime, you can still clearly see the roadway, vehicles, buildings, signs, and surrounding environment.

That's an important distinction because judging windshield tint only from an exterior photo doesn't tell you what the driver actually sees.

Lighting also matters. A tinted windshield can appear significantly darker from outside than it does when looking through it from inside the vehicle.

Why Did We Choose 35% for This Mazda CX-9?

The customer originally considered 20% windshield tint.

He wanted a darker appearance, glare reduction, privacy, and heat rejection, but he also specifically asked about being able to see through the windshield at night.

That's where 35% made more sense for what he wanted.

We explained that 20% would be considerably darker at night. Since nighttime visibility was an important concern, we recommended moving up to 35% rather than going as dark as he initially considered.

He agreed and chose 35% Ceramic.

The percentage and the film package also served two different purposes.

35% was chosen primarily as the balance between appearance, glare reduction, and visibility.

Ceramic was chosen primarily for heat rejection.

The customer wanted the strongest heat-rejection option among our regular film packages, which is why he chose Ceramic throughout the vehicle rather than Standard or Carbon.

The rest of the CX-9 was also tinted in Ceramic film. You can see our full window tinting packages to compare what's included across each tier. This article is specifically about what 35% Ceramic looks like on the full windshield.

Does 35% Windshield Tint Make It Hard to See at Night?

Any time you tint a full windshield, nighttime visibility needs to be part of the decision.

35% is considerably easier to see through at night than 20%, which was one of the main reasons we recommended it for this customer.

That doesn't mean 35% will look exactly like clear glass at night. It still reduces the amount of visible light passing through the windshield.

Street lighting, weather, headlights, eyesight, surrounding traffic, and whether you're driving through a brightly lit commercial area or a dark rural road can all affect how comfortable a tinted windshield feels.

For customers who want even more nighttime visibility, we also offer lighter windshield percentages such as 50%, 55%, and 70%.

For this customer, however, 35% provided the darker appearance and glare reduction he wanted without going down to the 20% windshield he originally considered.

If you're considering a tinted windshield primarily for heat rejection and don't want a noticeably dark windshield, remember that you don't have to choose a dark percentage to get the benefits of Ceramic film. A 70% Ceramic windshield is nearly invisible but still delivers significant heat and UV rejection.

What Are the Window Tint Laws in New Jersey for an SUV?

New Jersey has restrictions on aftermarket window tint applied to the windshield and front side windows.

A 35% full windshield tint is not permitted under the standard New Jersey window tint rules. This installation should not be interpreted as an example of a street-legal windshield setup in New Jersey.

The customer featured in this article did not have a medical exemption.

If you're considering windshield tint in New Jersey, it's important to understand the law before choosing a percentage. If you want a windshield option that provides heat rejection without the legal risk, we also offer 70% and 80% windshield film β€” nearly invisible from outside but still delivering meaningful heat and UV blocking through Ceramic film.

We can explain the different windshield film options and percentages, but customers are responsible for understanding the legal requirements that apply to their vehicle.

How Long Does It Take to Tint a Mazda CX-9 Windshield?

For the full windshield on this 2007–2015 Mazda CX-9, we generally recommend allowing approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

There was no existing aftermarket film on this windshield, so we did not need to perform a tint-removal service before installation.

Installation time can vary depending on the vehicle, windshield condition, existing film, sensors or equipment around the glass, and our schedule that day.

A windshield installation also requires careful preparation because the film is being installed over a large piece of glass directly in the driver's field of view.

How Much Does It Cost to Tint a Mazda CX-9 Windshield in South Jersey?

For the full front windshield on a 2007–2015 Mazda CX-9, our current pricing is:

Film PackageFull WindshieldWhat You Get
Standard$124.99Appearance, privacy, UV blocking
Carbon$149.99Everything in Standard + significant heat rejection
Ceramic$224.99Everything in Carbon + maximum heat and UV blocking, clearest visibility

The customer featured in this article chose 35% Ceramic windshield tint for $224.99.

His main reason for upgrading to Ceramic was heat rejection β€” especially important on a full windshield that takes the most direct sun exposure of any glass on the vehicle.

Standard is the right choice for customers focused on appearance and reducing visible light. Carbon adds meaningful heat rejection over Standard. Ceramic is our top package and delivers the highest heat and UV rejection of any film we carry β€” on a windshield, that difference is felt immediately on a hot South Jersey summer day.

All film packages include a manufacturer warranty.

Windshield tinting is priced separately from our complete-vehicle packages. The $99 window tinting special applies to qualifying sedans and coupes only and does not include windshield tinting β€” but if you're looking to tint the full vehicle including the windshield, we can quote the complete job when you call.

For a full Ceramic tint job on an SUV like the CX-9 β€” all windows plus the windshield β€” pricing starts around $649.99. Call or text 856-577-4119 for an exact quote based on your vehicle and the package you want.

Mazda CX-9 Windshield Tinting in South Jersey

This customer traveled to us from the Willingboro area and wanted Ceramic film throughout his CX-9, with heat rejection being his biggest reason for choosing the package.

For the windshield, however, film performance wasn't his only consideration.

He originally wanted 20%, but after discussing nighttime visibility, 35% became the better fit for how he planned to use the vehicle.

That's why we recommend choosing windshield tint based on more than how dark it looks in a photo.

Think about how much you drive at night, where you normally drive, whether glare or heat is your biggest concern, and how dark you actually want the windshield to appear.

If heat rejection is your main goal, a lighter Ceramic film may also make more sense than simply choosing the darkest percentage available.
