This 2012 Ram 1500 received 35% Carbon window tint on its two front doors. The lighter front percentage provided excellent outward visibility, but it did not create the darker appearance or close factory-glass match the customer ultimately wanted.
The customer returned approximately two hours later and asked us to remove the new 35% film and replace it with 20%. This real installation shows why seeing a percentage on your own truck can sometimes change your original decision.
The Ram had a navy-blue exterior, black interior and factory privacy glass across the rear section. This was the customer’s second vehicle with Dope Tintings, and he traveled from the Centerville area for the installation.
Why Did the Customer Initially Choose 35%?
During our original conversation, the customer told us he wanted the two front windows tinted but did not want them as dark as the factory rear section.
We explained that 20% would provide a much closer visual match to the factory privacy glass.

Based on our experience tinting trucks and SUVs, factory rear glass commonly appears to be within a range where 20% film on the clear front doors creates a closely coordinated appearance.
The customer was concerned that 20% would be too dark for him. He believed 35% would provide the privacy he wanted while allowing the front windows to remain noticeably lighter than the rear.
He ultimately felt more comfortable trying 35% first, so we installed 35% Carbon film on the two front doors.
How Did 35% Look Against the Factory Rear Glass?
The difference was noticeable. The 35% front windows appeared substantially lighter than the factory rear privacy glass.
From certain exterior angles, the 35% created a silhouette effect around the driver’s area. From other angles, however, it was possible to see much more clearly through the front windows and into the cabin.
The Ram had a black interior, which helped the front windows appear somewhat darker from certain viewpoints. However, the windshield did not have full-windshield tint. It only had an existing front strip, so daylight could still enter through most of the windshield and illuminate the front cabin.
That incoming light made the 35% front windows appear more transparent than the customer expected. This was the exact result we had discussed with him before the installation.
Did the Rain Affect How the 35% Tint Looked?
These photographs were taken on a rainy day. Overcast lighting, reflections on the glass and the angle from which the truck is viewed can all affect how dark 35% appears in a photograph or in person.
At one angle, the front windows may look fairly dark and show only a silhouette. Moving to another side of the truck may allow significantly more cabin detail to become visible.

These rainy-day photographs are also a useful reminder that one picture cannot show exactly how a tint percentage will appear under every lighting condition.
What Was Visibility Like From Inside the 35% Tint?
From inside the Ram, 35% provided very manageable visibility during daylight.
Based on our experience with 35% front-window tint, it is also one of the percentages we commonly discuss with customers who prioritize easier nighttime visibility.
It allowed considerably more light through the front side windows than percentages such as 20%, 15% or 5%. For someone who wants a lighter front-window option and prioritizes outward visibility, 35% is a percentage we commonly recommend discussing.
Visibility was one of the reasons the customer originally selected it. The problem was not his ability to see out. The problem was that the 35% did not look dark enough from outside or coordinate as closely with the factory rear glass as he ultimately wanted.
This installation demonstrates the tradeoff clearly:
- 35% fronts: lighter appearance and easier outward visibility
- 20% fronts: darker appearance and typically a closer visual match with factory rear privacy glass in this range
Why Did the Customer Return Two Hours Later?
After seeing the completed truck and spending some time with the 35% front windows, the customer decided they were too light for his goals.
The front windows did not provide the level of privacy he expected. He could also see the contrast between the lighter 35% fronts and the darker factory rear glass.
He returned approximately two hours later and asked us to remove the newly installed film and replace it with 20% Carbon.
Our original recommendation was intended to help him avoid the additional time and expense involved with installing one percentage, removing it and then installing another. However, he needed to see the 35% on his own truck before fully understanding the difference we had described.

Was There a Problem With the 35% Installation?
No. The film was removed because the customer changed his mind about the percentage, not because there was a problem with the product or installation.
The 35% Carbon installation looked and functioned as expected:
- It created a lighter front-window appearance
- It provided some added privacy
- It maintained excellent outward visibility
- It remained visibly lighter than the factory rear privacy glass
- Its exterior appearance changed with lighting and viewing angle
The customer simply realized that his desired appearance was closer to the 20% option we had originally recommended.
