This black 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L received 35% Carbon film across the full front windshield. The customer wanted additional privacy without choosing a windshield percentage that would be as difficult to see through as the extremely dark tint installed on the sides and rear.

The 35% windshield complemented the vehicle’s 5% front side windows and darkened factory rear glass while still allowing considerably more light through the windshield.

From outside, the driver was difficult to identify from most angles, but direct sunlight entering the cabin made some interior details and silhouettes visible in several photographs.

This customer’s primary goal was maximum privacy and a blackout appearance. However, he did not want the windshield to be as dark as the side windows because forward visibility was still important to him.

The sides and rear were already extremely dark:

• 5% Carbon film on the two front doors
• 15% Carbon film over the factory rear privacy glass
• Factory rear glass measured approximately 25%
• Black exterior
• Black interior

Adding 35% Carbon to the windshield helped complete the dark exterior appearance without attempting to make every piece of glass transmit the same amount of light.

From our experience, 35% is our usual go-to recommendation when someone wants a noticeably dark full windshield while maintaining a more practical view than 25%, 20%, or darker windshield options. Personal preferences and driving conditions still matter, but 35% generally provides a useful balance between appearance, privacy, and visibility.

The customer selected Carbon because he wanted the performance benefits of improved heat rejection in addition to the darker appearance. He had originally found Dope Tintings through our educational content explaining the differences between Standard, Carbon, and Ceramic film.

This was his first appointment with us, and he traveled from the Philadelphia area after deciding that he trusted the detailed information we provided about film performance and nighttime visibility.

From outside during daylight, the 35% windshield looked dark and coordinated well with the much darker side and rear glass. The driver was generally difficult to identify, although the exact appearance changed according to the viewing angle and the amount of sunlight entering the cabin.

The vehicle was photographed on a bright, sunny day. Because of the way the Grand Cherokee L was parked, sunlight was shining directly through the windshield. That additional cabin light made the interior and occasional silhouettes more visible than they would appear under different lighting conditions.

This is an important example of why the same 35% windshield can look different from one photograph to another. Its apparent darkness can change based on:

• The direction of the sun
• Reflections on the windshield
• The viewer’s position
• Interior color
• Light entering through the panoramic roof
• The darkness of the surrounding side and rear glass

The black interior helped maintain a darker overall appearance, while the 5% front side windows and darkened rear glass limited the amount of light entering from other directions.

Even with 35% on the windshield, this Grand Cherokee L maintained a strong blackout appearance. However, it was not completely impossible to see inside. When strong sunlight entered directly through the windshield, someone standing outside could make out portions of the cabin or determine that someone was sitting inside.

That was demonstrated during the customer’s pickup. He initially thought the vehicle looked slightly lighter than expected, but the sun was shining directly through the windshield. Once we explained how incoming windshield light affected the appearance, he understood why the same setup could look darker from another angle or under different lighting.

From the interior, the view through the 35% windshield remained considerably clearer than its dark exterior appearance might suggest. The daytime photographs show that the road, surrounding vehicles, buildings, signs, and other objects remained visible through the treated glass, even with strong sunlight creating glare.

Based on our experience tinting vehicles for more than 20 years, 35% is typically our go-to recommendation when a customer specifically wants a dark full windshield while still prioritizing everyday visibility.

That does not mean every driver will have the same experience. Visibility can still be affected by:

• Street lighting
• Weather conditions
• Headlight performance
• The driver’s eyesight
• Familiarity with tinted windshields
• Rural roads or other poorly illuminated areas

Compared with the 5% side windows on this Jeep, the 35% windshield allows substantially more light into the driver’s forward field of view. That difference is intentional. The customer wanted the privacy benefits of an extremely dark sides-and-rear setup without creating the same level of nighttime difficulty through the windshield.

This vehicle did not have an inspection sticker on the windshield at the time of installation, so no inspection-sticker removal or static-cling service was required. The customer also did not have an approved medical exemption.
