From outside during daylight, the 20% windshield appeared very dark. Identifying the driver was difficult from several viewing positions, although the result changed with the angle, reflections and available light.

The windshield did not produce a complete blackout appearance under every condition. Instead, someone inside could appear as a dark silhouette from certain angles. From another angle, additional cabin detail could become visible.

The blue exterior and brown interior also influenced the photographed appearance. Reflections from the cloudy sky helped conceal the cabin in several photographs, while changes in the viewing angle altered how much of the interior remained visible.

This is why one photograph cannot guarantee exactly how 20% will look on every BMW X3. Exterior color, interior color, surrounding light, weather, reflections and the darkness of the other windows all affect its appearance.

When the side and rear windows allow less surrounding light into the cabin, there is less interior illumination visible through the windshield. That can make the windshield appear darker than the same percentage installed on a vehicle with clear side windows.

During daylight, the view through the 20% windshield remained manageable for this experienced customer. The interior photographs show that the road, surrounding vehicles and exterior environment were still visible through the windshield during the day.

Nighttime is a different situation.
