We recently installed 20% carbon window tint on a 2026 Subaru WRX tS at Dope Tintings Automotive Window Tint in Pennsauken, New Jersey. We tinted all four door windows and the rear window while leaving the front windshield untinted.

This particular vehicle was a 2026 Subaru WRX tS. We installed:

• 20% carbon window tint
• Tint on all four door windows
• Tint on the rear window
• No tint on the front windshield

The finished tint gave the WRX a darker and more aggressive appearance from every angle. Because the windshield remained untinted, daylight can still enter through the front of the vehicle. This is one reason you may still see silhouettes or parts of the interior when viewing the car from outside.

This was a returning Dope Tintings customer. We had installed 35% tint on his previous sedans, but he believed the WRX’s sporty design would look better with a darker shade.

Appearance was his main reason for selecting 20%, although he also wanted more privacy. The darker film also helps reduce glare, while the carbon construction provides better heat rejection than a basic standard film.

He was already familiar with this shade because the two front windows on his SUV were tinted to approximately 20% to match its rear privacy glass. Since he had experience driving with a similar darkness, he was not overly concerned about adjusting to it on the WRX.

After seeing the finished installation, the customer was extremely happy that he chose 20% instead of returning to the 35% shade used on his previous sedans.

Twenty-percent tint provides moderate privacy rather than complete privacy. In bright daylight, someone standing outside the WRX may still see silhouettes, movement, and portions of the cabin.

The windows can appear darker from certain angles or when the side of the vehicle is shaded. They may look lighter when direct sunlight passes through the opposite windows or the untinted windshield. This is why the same 20% film can look different depending on the photograph, weather, lighting, and viewing angle.

If maximum privacy is the goal, 20% may not be dark enough. However, it is a practical option for drivers who want more privacy than 35% without going as dark as 15% or 5%.

Daytime visibility through 20% tint is generally good. It reduces brightness and glare while still allowing the driver to see through the side and rear windows under normal daylight conditions.

Drivers moving down from 35% will notice that 20% is darker, but the difference is usually manageable during the day. It gives the cabin a more shaded feeling without creating the extremely dark appearance associated with limo tint.

Actual visibility can vary with the weather and cabin lighting. On a bright day, outward visibility is normally easier. On a dark, rainy, or heavily overcast day, the windows may feel darker.

For most drivers accustomed to tinted windows, 20% is not excessively dark for everyday nighttime driving. Visibility is generally comfortable in well-lit areas with streetlights, storefront lighting, or other vehicles nearby.

It can become more challenging on poorly lit roads or while looking through a side window into a dark area. A driver new to window tint may occasionally roll down a window while backing into a space or parallel parking at night. This is normal when adjusting to a darker film.

In my experience, most customers become comfortable with 20% over time. It is still important to consider your eyesight, driving habits, and how frequently you travel through poorly illuminated areas before selecting it.
