What Does 20% Front Window Tint Look Like on a 2009–2018 Ram 1500?

This 2012 Ram 1500 received 20% Carbon window tint on its two front doors. The finished front windows coordinated almost perfectly with the truck’s factory rear privacy glass and created the darker, more private appearance the customer originally wanted.
This was the second percentage installed on the front doors that day. The customer initially selected 35% Carbon because he was concerned that 20% would be too dark. After seeing the lighter percentage on his truck, he returned approximately two hours later and requested the 20% setup we had originally recommended.
The Ram had a navy-blue exterior, black interior and factory privacy glass across the rear section. The customer came from the Centerville area and had previously brought another vehicle to Dope Tintings.
Why Did the Customer Replace 35% With 20%?
During our original conversation, the customer explained that he wanted privacy but did not want the two front windows to be as dark as the factory rear section.
We recommended 20% because his description of the appearance he wanted was closer to a factory-match setup. The customer was concerned that 20% would be too dark, so he decided to try 35% Carbon first.
Once the 35% installation was completed, the difference between the front and rear windows was noticeable. Depending on the viewing angle, it was possible to see clearly through the front windows and identify considerably more of the driver and interior than the customer expected.
He returned approximately two hours later because the 35% fronts appeared too light for his preferences.

How Closely Did 20% Match the Factory Rear Glass?
The 20% Carbon film created an almost perfect visual match with the factory rear privacy glass on this particular Ram.
From the side, the two front doors coordinated much more closely with the darker rear section than they did with 35%. The truck developed a more balanced appearance from front to rear without installing additional film over the factory privacy glass.
This does not mean every Ram 1500 has rear glass that will look identical with 20% on the front doors. Factory privacy glass can vary by vehicle, model year and specific piece of glass.
Interior color, windshield light, reflections and viewing angle can also affect the final appearance. We recommend evaluating the actual vehicle rather than assuming one percentage will produce an exact match on every truck.
What Did 20% Look Like From Outside During Daylight?
From outside during daylight, the 20% front windows produced more of a silhouette appearance around the driver’s area.
The black interior helped reduce the amount of visible cabin detail. The front windows still did not make the driver completely invisible from every possible angle, but they provided noticeably more privacy than the original 35% installation.
The truck’s windshield did not have full-windshield tint. It had an existing front strip, but most of the windshield remained untreated. Daylight could therefore enter through the windshield and illuminate the front seats and dashboard.
Even with that incoming light, the 20% Carbon appeared considerably darker than the 35% and coordinated much more closely with the factory rear section.
Is 20% Darker Than 35%?
Yes. A lower VLT percentage allows less visible light through the film, so 20% is darker than 35%.

- 35% Carbon: lighter appearance, more visible cabin detail and a noticeable contrast against the factory rear glass
- 20% Carbon: darker silhouette appearance, more privacy and an almost perfect visual match with the factory rear glass

The correct choice depends on what the customer wants the film to accomplish. Someone prioritizing easier nighttime visibility may prefer 35%. Someone prioritizing privacy and a closer factory-glass match may be happier with 20%.
What Is Visibility Like Through 20% Front-Window Tint?
During daylight, the view through the 20% front windows remained manageable from inside this Ram.
Based on our experience with 20% front-window tint, nighttime visibility can become more challenging on poorly illuminated roads, while turning or when parking in dark areas.
Some drivers may need to lower a window when additional visibility is needed.
That tradeoff is why we discussed both percentages with this customer before beginning the original installation.
The 35% option provided easier outward visibility but did not satisfy his privacy and appearance goals. After seeing both percentages on the same truck, he preferred the darker 20% setup.
Was the Customer Happier With the 20% Replacement?
Yes. The customer was much happier after seeing the 20% Carbon on the two front doors.
The darker film produced the privacy, silhouette effect and coordinated factory-style appearance he had been trying to describe during our original conversation.
Our recommendation was based on listening to what he wanted the finished truck to look like. However, he needed to see the lighter 35% installed on his own vehicle before feeling comfortable moving to 20%.
