This blue 2021 Audi Q5 received 20% Carbon tint on its two front roll-down windows at our Pennsauken, NJ shop. The customer wanted the front windows to match the factory rear privacy glass while adding better heat rejection for herself and her husband.

The Q5 had a black interior, and the 20% film created an extremely close visual match with the rear glass. From outside, the driver appeared mostly as a silhouette, although the amount of visible detail changed with the viewing angle, sunlight and position of the panoramic-roof shade.

The customer’s first goal was eliminating the unfinished appearance created by having clear front windows next to dark factory rear glass. She wanted the front and rear sections to flow together instead of making the front of the cabin look like a fishbowl.

We installed 20% Carbon film on:

• Driver-side front roll-down window
• Passenger-side front roll-down window

This Q5 does not have additional fixed glass beside the side mirrors, so the installation only included the two main front windows.

The customer selected Carbon because appearance was not her only concern. She also wanted better heat rejection for herself and her husband without paying the higher price for Ceramic film.

Standard film could have produced a similar 20% appearance, but Carbon was the better package for her performance goal. The upgrade was for improved heat rejection, not because Carbon was required to make the windows look darker.

We compared this Carbon installation with 20% Standard film on another Q5 to answer whether Carbon tint actually looks darker or better than Standard tint.

This was also not her first experience with Dope Tintings. We previously tinted another Audi for her, although we do not have the exact model recorded. She returned with this Q5 because she was already familiar with our work.

On this particular 2021 Audi Q5, 20% Carbon produced an extremely close visual match with the factory rear privacy glass.

From the side, the newly tinted front windows blended naturally into the rear section. The front glass did not appear noticeably lighter than the rear, and the finished installation gave the Q5 a more complete factory-style appearance.

The black interior also helped create a darker exterior appearance. When viewed from outside during daylight, the driver appeared mostly as a silhouette rather than being clearly visible from every direction.

However, 20% did not make the front windows completely blacked out. Visibility into the cabin changed depending on several real-world conditions:

• The angle from which the vehicle was viewed
• How sunlight reached the glass
• Reflections from the sky and surrounding buildings
• The amount of light entering through the windshield
• Whether the panoramic-roof shade was open or closed

Opening the panoramic-roof shade can allow more light into the black interior, making the driver or parts of the cabin easier to identify. Closing the shade reduces that overhead cabin light and can make the same windows appear darker from outside.

This is why the 20% tint may look darker in one photograph and more transparent in another. The film percentage is not changing. The lighting, reflections and viewing angle are changing what the camera or observer can see.

Although 20% matched this Q5 extremely well, factory privacy glass can vary between vehicles. The photographs provide a real example, but customers should not assume that every factory rear window will measure or appear exactly the same.

During daylight, the view through the 20% front windows was considerably clearer from inside the Q5 than the exterior appearance might suggest. Bright outdoor conditions made vehicles and surrounding objects clearly visible through the treated glass.

At night, 20% is also manageable for everyday driving when the surrounding area has normal streetlights, parking-lot lighting or other exterior illumination. It is not an unusually extreme percentage for a driver who wants a practical factory-matched setup.

The main limitation can occur while parking or maneuvering in a poorly lit area. If there is very little exterior light, the driver may need to lower a window for a clearer view of a curb, parking line or nearby object.

That possibility applies to any darker window film. The less light available outside, the less light there is to see through the glass.

We commonly recommend 20% when a customer’s factory rear privacy glass measures close to 20%—often within approximately 18–25%—and they want a practical factory-matched appearance. It completes the vehicle’s appearance without creating the extreme nighttime limitations associated with percentages such as 5%.

When the customer saw the finished Q5, she was happy with how closely the front windows matched the rear. The installation completed the appearance she wanted while giving her the additional heat rejection that led her to select Carbon.
