This black 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee came to Dope Tintings in Pennsauken, NJ, for Carbon window tinting on all sides and the back window. We installed 15% Carbon film on the two front doors and 50% Carbon over the factory rear privacy glass to create a closely coordinated 15% appearance. The customer wanted more privacy than the original factory glass provided without choosing the much darker appearance of 5%.
This real installation shows South Jersey drivers how different film percentages can be combined to create a closely coordinated appearance over clear front glass and factory rear privacy glass.
The Jeep had a tan interior, and the windshield and sunroof remained untreated. Both of those details affected how much light entered the cabin and how dark the completed installation appeared from outside.
Why Did the Customer Choose a 15% Appearance?
The customer felt that the Jeep’s factory rear privacy glass was too light for the appearance and privacy she wanted. However, she did not want to go as dark as 5%.
That made 15% a suitable middle option for her goals. It created a noticeably darker appearance than the original factory rear glass while allowing more light through than 5%.
The customer also selected Carbon because she wanted some heat rejection through the treated glass. Standard would have provided the darker appearance and privacy, but Carbon added heat-rejection performance.
She did not plan to tint the windshield, so Carbon provided the balance of performance and price that made sense for her installation. Ceramic would provide greater heat rejection through the glass where it was installed, but more complete glass coverage can help maximize the overall heat-rejection benefit throughout the cabin.
How Did We Create the 15% Look on This Jeep Grand Cherokee?
The front doors originally had much lighter glass than the rear section, while the rear doors and back window already had factory privacy glass.
For this installation, we used:
- 15% Carbon film on the two front doors
- 50% Carbon film over the factory rear privacy glass
- Carbon film across all sides and the back window
- No film on the full windshield
- No film on the sunroof
Based on our experience with this generation of Jeep Grand Cherokee, its factory rear privacy glass commonly appears to be around the 20% to 25% range. That is an experienced approximation of the factory shade, not an exact meter reading from this particular Jeep.
Installing 15% directly over the clear front glass and 50% over the darker factory rear glass produced a closely coordinated appearance across the sides and rear.
No tint shop can guarantee that clear front glass and factory-tinted rear glass will look completely identical from every angle. The glass begins at different levels of darkness, and the amount of light entering each section of the cabin can change its appearance.
On this Grand Cherokee, the completed front and rear sections matched very closely.
How Did 15% Look From Outside the Grand Cherokee?
The installation gave the black Grand Cherokee a dark, coordinated appearance during daylight.
The photographs were taken on a cloudy day, which reduced the amount of bright light entering the cabin. Under those conditions, the driver and front cabin appeared primarily as silhouettes from outside.
The exact appearance still changed with the viewing angle. Light entering through the untreated windshield, opposite windows or sunroof could make the tan interior more visible from certain positions.
The tan interior also reflected more light than a black interior would under similar conditions. Interior color affects the apparent darkness of window tint from outside, but it does not change the actual percentage of the film.
Despite the lighter interior, the 15% front film and darkened rear section gave this Jeep the additional privacy the customer wanted without producing the stronger blackout appearance associated with 5%.
What Was Visibility Like Through 15% From Inside?
During daylight, the view through the 15% front windows was clear and manageable from inside this Grand Cherokee. Daylight helped illuminate the road, surrounding vehicles and other objects outside.
Nighttime visibility can be more challenging, particularly in areas with limited street lighting. Parking, turning or checking for objects beside the vehicle may require additional care in dark conditions.
Some drivers may need to lower a window when extra side visibility is needed. Weather, eyesight, road lighting and previous experience with darker film can all affect how comfortable someone feels with 15%.
