15% tint gives a 2010–2015 Toyota Prius a dark, private appearance while remaining more manageable than 5% for everyday driving. On this actual customer’s black 2015 Toyota Prius, we installed 15% XPEL XR ceramic film on all 10 pieces of side and rear glass. During daylight, occupants generally appear as silhouettes and are difficult to identify through the side windows.

This example applies to the third-generation Toyota Prius hatchback and the following model years:

The featured vehicle is a black 2015 Toyota Prius with a dark gray interior. The photographs show the customer’s actual vehicle after the installation, not a stock image or computer-generated tint simulation.

Unlike a conventional sedan with four roll-down windows and one rear window, this Prius has several additional fixed pieces of glass. We tinted:

1. Driver-side front roll-down window
2. Passenger-side front roll-down window
3. Driver-side rear roll-down window
4. Passenger-side rear roll-down window
5. Driver-side fixed window near the side mirror
6. Passenger-side fixed window near the side mirror
7. Driver-side rear quarter window
8. Passenger-side rear quarter window
9. Upper rear hatch glass
10. Lower vertical hatch glass

Tinting all 10 pieces created a consistent appearance around the passenger compartment and cargo area. Leaving the small fixed windows or lower hatch glass untinted would have created visible clear sections in the finished installation.

The customer also selected 55% XPEL XR ceramic film for the full windshield. That installation will be covered in a separate article so the windshield topic can answer different questions without competing with this page in Google’s search results.

The customer was tired of feeling as though she was driving in a fishbowl. She wanted to make it harder for people outside the Prius to see her clearly while she was driving or sitting inside the vehicle.

Light sensitivity was another important consideration. She wanted film that would help reduce the amount of solar energy entering through the Prius’s large glass area while providing the dark appearance she preferred.

She chose XPEL XR because she wanted ceramic-film performance, including heat rejection and protection from the sun. Dope Tintings also offered the XPEL option at a price she found more affordable than other XPEL choices she had considered.

The finished Prius has a silhouette appearance during daylight. Someone standing outside can generally recognize that a person is sitting inside, but identifying the person through the side glass is much more difficult.

The amount of visible detail changes with the viewing angle. Looking through the windshield allows more exterior light to enter the cabin, which can make an occupant easier to notice. Reflections on the side windows can produce a darker appearance from another position.

The dark gray interior supports the shadowed appearance without completely blacking out the cabin. An otherwise identical Prius with a beige or light gray interior would normally appear somewhat lighter with the same 15% film.

Fifteen-percent tint is manageable at night for many drivers, especially in areas with streetlights, parking-lot lighting, and other surrounding illumination. It is darker than 20%, however, so it requires more adjustment than a lighter film.

The greatest challenge normally occurs while parking in a poorly illuminated area. A driver may need to lower a front window to see parking-space lines, curbs, or nearby objects more clearly.

Rearward visibility can also be reduced because this installation covers the rear quarter windows and both sections of hatch glass. Individual eyesight, weather, and familiarity with darker tint should be considered before choosing 15%.

Yes. We recommend 15% for a Prius owner who wants substantial privacy but does not want to commit to the significantly darker 5% appearance.

During the day, outward visibility through 15% is generally comfortable. At night, it remains practical for an experienced driver under normal lighting conditions. First-time tint customers who are especially concerned about nighttime visibility may prefer 20%.

This Prius requires additional material and installation time because it has 10 pieces of side and rear glass. Every fixed window must be measured, prepared, installed, and inspected separately.

The two-piece rear hatch also requires film on both the large upper window and the narrow lower vertical glass. That layout involves more work than a conventional sedan with a single rear window.

Because the Prius has more than seven windows, it is not eligible for the $99.99 or $149.99 promotional tint packages. Those specials are limited to qualifying two-door coupes and four-door sedans that can be completed within the promotional installation time.

The $99.99 package does not include a warranty. The $149.99 package covers the same eligible window package but includes a one-year warranty. Neither special applies to this Prius.

The 15% XPEL XR ceramic installation featured in this article costs $474.99 for all 10 side and rear glass pieces.

XPEL XR is worth considering when heat rejection and solar protection are priorities in addition to appearance. The Prius has an expansive windshield, several side windows, rear quarter glass, and a divided rear hatch, so sunlight can enter the cabin from numerous directions.

Ceramic film works most effectively as part of a more complete installation. This customer covered all 10 side and rear pieces and also added ceramic film to the windshield, creating broader glass coverage than a customer tinting only two windows.
