15% carbon front window tint gives a Ford Transit Connect work van a dark, silhouette-style appearance during daylight. On this real customer’s white 2014 Transit Connect, we installed the film on the two front roll-down windows and two fixed front quarter windows.

The black interior and windowless cargo area helped the front cabin appear darker from outside. Light entering through the large untreated windshield made the driver somewhat visible, but identifying the person required a closer look.

From inside, 15% remained clear during the day and manageable at night. Parking in a poorly illuminated area may require lowering a front window for a better view.

The customer initially considered 5% ceramic film because he had heard that ceramic tint would be easier to see through. We explained that ceramic construction does not make a 5% shade appear clear.

The percentage determines how much visible light passes through the film. A 5% ceramic film is still extremely dark and would be significantly more challenging to see through at night than 15% carbon.

He selected 15% carbon because it provided:

• A dark appearance without choosing 5%
• More manageable nighttime visibility
• Additional daytime privacy
• Heat rejection through the front windows
• A lower price than ceramic film
• Better value for a van that was not receiving windshield film

Ceramic would provide stronger solar performance, but he was not planning to tint the windshield. For his budget and installation goals, carbon was the more practical option.

The front windows create a silhouette appearance during daylight. Someone outside can generally tell that a person is inside the van, but identifying the driver requires standing close or looking through the untreated windshield.

The solid cargo section and black interior reduce the amount of light traveling through the cabin. That makes the front windows appear darker than they would on a passenger vehicle with glass surrounding the entire interior.

The white exterior does not make the tint itself look lighter or darker. Tint appearance is influenced primarily by:

• Reflections on the windows

In this case, the large windshield brightened the front cabin slightly, while the black interior and enclosed cargo area helped maintain the silhouette effect.

During daylight, 15% carbon provides a clear outward view through the front doors. Available sunlight makes surrounding vehicles, mirrors, intersections, and parking spaces easy to see.

At night, the film remains manageable under streetlights and normal business lighting. Visibility becomes more challenging in dark parking lots or poorly illuminated loading areas.

When backing into a tight space or parking somewhere without enough light, the driver may need to lower a window. Weather, eyesight, and familiarity with darker film can also affect nighttime comfort.

Yes, we recommend 15% for an experienced driver who wants a dark front-window appearance without going as dark as 5%. It offers a useful balance between daytime privacy and outward visibility.

For a commercial van, 15% can help reduce the open, exposed appearance of the front cabin while remaining easier to use than limo tint. Drivers who frequently work after dark should still consider the lighting conditions around their regular routes and job sites.

The percentage may be practical to drive with, but owners of New Jersey-registered commercial vehicles also need to consider inspection requirements before installing it.

It can. New Jersey applies different inspection requirements to commercial vehicles than it does to ordinary passenger vehicles.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission states that gasoline or bi-fuel vehicles registered with commercial X plates require annual safety and emissions inspections. Certain diesel commercial vehicles are also subject to annual inspection based on their registration and gross vehicle weight rating.

New Jersey’s commercial-vehicle inspection rules state that a vehicle cannot be certified when aftermarket tint film has been applied to the glazing immediately to the right or left of the driver.

Therefore, an affected Ford Transit Connect registered with commercial plates may need to have its front-door tint removed before its annual inspection and reinstalled afterward unless an applicable exemption has been approved.

How long should the windows remain closed after installation?
Keep the roll-down windows closed for at least 24 hours. Temporary moisture, haze, or small water pockets may remain visible while the film cures.
