The customer recently had a newborn baby and wanted additional shade and heat rejection across the side and rear windows. She was not interested in tinting the windshield or panoramic roof during this appointment.

She was already familiar with the 15%-front and dark-rear combination. This was approximately the second time we completed this particular setup for her and the fourth vehicle she has brought to Dope Tintings.

Her previous vehicles included an Acura RDX and another Acura. Because she already knew what the percentage looked like and how it performed, she could select it based on firsthand experience instead of relying only on a tint display.

The 15% front windows create a silhouette appearance during daylight. Someone standing outside can generally tell that a person is inside, but they would need to move closer to identify the driver.

The very light gray interior reflects more light than a black interior would. That prevents the 15% front windows from consistently looking blacked out, especially when sunlight enters through the untreated windshield.

Viewing angle, cloud cover, reflections, and the amount of light entering the cabin can make the driver more or less visible.

The approximately 5% rear section appears nearly blacked out under normal daylight conditions. It is difficult to see shapes, passengers, or objects through the rear doors and back window from outside.

Even the MDX’s almost-white interior does not make the rear section easy to see through. The factory privacy glass and added 15% film substantially limit the visible light entering through those windows.

The appearance can change when the panoramic-roof shade is open on a bright day. Additional overhead light may create more of a silhouette from certain angles, but the rear section remains considerably more private than the 15% front doors.

The transition from 15% in the front to approximately 5% in the rear gives the MDX a noticeable two-tone appearance. Although we generally prefer using the same finished percentage throughout a vehicle, this combination has a smoother flow than setups with a larger difference between the front and rear.

The front windows are dark without appearing completely black, while the rear section provides considerably stronger privacy. This gradual change works well with the MDX’s long side profile and factory privacy glass.

During daylight, the 15% front doors remain easy to see through from the driver’s seat. The untreated windshield also allows plenty of light into the front cabin, so normal forward and side visibility should remain manageable.

The rear doors and back window mainly affect the driver when reversing, checking behind the vehicle, or parking. Their approximately 5% appearance limits more available light than the front doors.

At night, the 15% front windows remain considerably easier to manage than the darker rear section. Looking through the rear doors or back window can become challenging in poorly illuminated areas, particularly while parallel parking.

The customer wanted more heat rejection than she would receive from the standard-film option, making carbon the practical middle choice.

Ceramic film was available, but she was not planning to tint the windshield or panoramic roof. Those large untreated glass areas would continue allowing solar heat into the cabin, preventing her from receiving the maximum whole-vehicle benefit associated with a more complete ceramic installation.

Carbon provided the balance she wanted:

• More heat rejection than standard film
• Dark percentages suitable for her preferred appearance
• Added shade around the rear seating area
• Lower pricing than ceramic
• A setup she had already used on a previous vehicle
