From what we've personally seen, an officer may handle a tint situation in different ways.

One driver may receive a single citation.

Another situation may involve separate citations associated with different tinted areas or additional violations.

We've had customers come to us after receiving more than one citation during the same traffic stop.

That's one reason we don't tell someone:

"Don't worry. The most this can ever cost you is $55."

We can't make that promise.

We've seen customers receive citations involving more than one tinted area.

For example, someone may have tint on:

• The full windshield
• Driver's window
• Front passenger window

How the officer writes the citations can affect what the customer ultimately has to address.

We've also personally seen windshield-related citations that were higher than the $55 citation customers commonly show us for other tint-related situations.

Again, don't use those firsthand examples as a guaranteed court schedule.

Look at your actual citations.

Look at the ticket the officer gave you and the instructions associated with it.

The court system can show you information associated with the citation and, for payable offenses, allow you to handle the ticket online.

If you're unsure what you were charged with, don't ask a tint shop to interpret your court case.

Contact the municipal court identified on the citation or use the official New Jersey court system.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions customers have.

Paying a $55 ticket, $100 ticket, $150 ticket, or any other citation does not purchase permanent permission to keep illegal tint on the vehicle.

You're resolving that citation.

If the tint remains on the vehicle and it continues to violate New Jersey law, another traffic stop can potentially result in another citation.

Yes.

We've seen it happen.

One of the more extreme situations we've personally encountered involved a customer who was stopped four times in the same day.

According to the customer, two stops involved the same township and the other two involved different townships.

He ended up dealing with four separate tickets.

That's an extreme firsthand example.

We're not saying the average driver with tinted front windows will be stopped four times in one day.

We're showing why:

"I already paid one tint ticket"

doesn't mean:

"Nobody can cite me for the tint again."

A previous ticket doesn't automatically make the tint compliant.

If you continue driving with the same noncompliant tint, another officer encountering the vehicle later can still address what they observe.

We've had customers who don't care.

They understand the risk, leave the tint installed, and deal with citations when they receive them.

We've had other customers receive one ticket or warning and immediately decide:

"I'm done dealing with this."

They come to us and have the film removed.

That's ultimately the vehicle owner's decision.

From the situations we've encountered, this distinction matters.

A ticket is an actual citation.

You need to handle it according to the instructions on the ticket.

A warning may give the driver an opportunity to correct the tint without immediately dealing with the same type of payable citation.

We've had customers tell us an officer gave them a warning and instructed them to remove the tint and provide proof that the problem was corrected.

Those customers commonly come to Dope Tintings specifically for removal.

Receiving an actual payable tint citation doesn't necessarily mean that Dope Tintings has to remove your film before you can pay that citation.

But leaving the noncompliant tint installed means the underlying issue remains.

So you have two separate questions:

What do I have to do about the ticket I already received?

and:

Do I want to keep driving with tint that could potentially result in another stop or citation?

Those aren't the same question.

Follow the instructions on your citation for the first one.

Whether you decide to remove the film afterward is up to you, subject to any specific court or law-enforcement instructions in your case.

If an officer specifically gives you a warning and tells you to correct the tint, follow the instructions you're given.

They don't necessarily want to remove their tint.

They simply don't want the warning to turn into a ticket during another traffic stop.

If you were told to return to a police department or otherwise provide proof of correction, make sure you understand exactly what that agency expects from you.

Someone removes the tint themselves or has somebody else remove it, then asks us:

"Can you just write me a receipt saying you removed it?"

Our answer is:

No.

We're not going to create documentation stating that Dope Tintings performed work we didn't perform.

We don't know how that document may later be used with law enforcement or a court.

Our receipts reflect services we actually completed.

Don't assume so.

Removing the tint shows that you've corrected the condition after the traffic stop.

But the citation was issued based on what allegedly existed when you were stopped.

What happens afterward depends on how your particular case is handled.

Dope Tintings cannot promise:

"Remove your tint, show the judge our receipt, and your ticket will disappear."

We don't control the municipal court.

If you're contesting a citation, follow the court instructions and obtain legal advice if you need it.

Here's an important correction to something customers sometimes hear:

A dismissed municipal charge does not automatically mean you're responsible for court costs anyway.

New Jersey Judiciary policy states that court costs generally cannot be assessed on a dismissed municipal charge unless a statute specifically permits them.

That's why we don't want to give blanket statements about what someone will owe after court.

Your actual outcome depends on what happens in your case.

Court can change the financial picture.

For Title 39 traffic matters where a defendant is found guilty, New Jersey law allows municipal court costs within the applicable statutory limit.

Also, New Jersey Courts explains that if you plead guilty or are found guilty in court, the penalties listed on the Statewide Violations Bureau Schedule do not necessarily apply.

That's another reason the $55 scheduled amount shouldn't be treated as the guaranteed final cost of every tint case that reaches court.
