Does Window Tint Go on the Inside or Outside of a Car?

Automotive window tint is installed on the inside of the car's glass. During installation, you may see the film temporarily placed on the outside while it's being measured, shaped, or prepped, but its final installation is on the interior surface where the glass helps protect it from weather and exterior wear.

At Dope Tintings in Pennsauken, this is something customers occasionally ask when they see us working on a vehicle. From outside the shop, it can look like we're installing tint on the exterior when what they're actually watching is the pre-installation process.

Because automotive window film is normally prepped on the outside of the glass before it's installed on the inside.

Someone watching an installation may see a technician place a large piece of film across a side window, rear window, or windshield from outside the vehicle.

That can make it look like the tint is going to stay there.

It isn't.

We're using the exterior glass during the preparation process.

Once the film has been properly prepared for that piece of glass, the final installation happens on the interior surface.

So if you're watching your vehicle being tinted and see film covering the outside of a window, don't assume the installation is finished.

You're probably watching the preparation stage.

The biggest reason is protection.

Think about everything the exterior of your vehicle deals with:

• Rain
• Snow
• Ice
• Road debris
• Dirt
• Car washes
• Weather
• Everyday exterior wear and tear

If normal automotive window film were installed on the outside, it would constantly be exposed to those conditions and wouldn't last nearly as long.

Installing the film on the interior surface allows the glass itself to help protect it from the outside environment.

That doesn't make the tint impossible to damage.

It means most of the weather and road-related abuse is happening to the glass instead of directly to the film.

Yes. You can wash the outside of your vehicle immediately after window tint is installed.

You don't have to wait several days because of the tint.

You can:

• Go through an automatic car wash
• Hand wash the vehicle
• Wash the exterior windows
• Drive in the rain
• Drive in the snow

None of those things are going to wash your window tint off.

Why?

The film isn't on the outside.

It's installed on the inside of the glass.

We've had customers ask whether they should avoid the car wash after leaving Dope Tintings, and from the tint's standpoint, there's no reason to.

If you want to leave our shop and go directly to the car wash, you can.

Yes.

The inside surface is where you actually need to think about the window film.

When you're cleaning the interior glass, you're not simply wiping bare glass anymore.

You're cleaning the surface of the window film.

Our recommendation is simple:

Use a soft microfiber towel and an ammonia-free glass cleaner.

One glass cleaner we recommend is Sprayway.

You don't need anything aggressive to keep tinted windows clean.

We don't recommend using paper towels on tinted windows.

Use a soft microfiber towel instead.

This is something customers sometimes misunderstand:

Window tint is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof.

The film is designed to handle normal use, but that doesn't mean you can rub it with anything and expect it to remain perfect.

Using the wrong abrasive material can scratch the film.

A clean, soft microfiber is the safer choice.

We recommend avoiding cleaners containing ammonia on the tinted interior surface.

Use a tint-safe, ammonia-free glass cleaner instead.

The goal isn't just making the glass look clean today.

You also want to take care of the film so it continues looking good over time.

This is where our basic rule comes in:

Take care of the film, and the film will take care of you.

Even though the film is protected from outside weather, there are plenty of things inside a vehicle that can damage it.

Over the years, we've seen scratches caused by things customers may not immediately think about.

One common example is a seat-belt buckle.

Some people release their seat belt and let it snap back. Depending on the vehicle, that buckle can hit the side glass.

Other possible causes include:

• Fingernails
• Rings and jewelry
• Objects being loaded into the vehicle
• Pets
• Children
• Abrasive cleaning materials
• Sharp objects

There's also another cause we've seen on roll-down windows:

Dirt inside the window gasket.

If you frequently drive with the windows down, dirt and debris can collect around the gasket.

When the window repeatedly moves up and down, that trapped dirt can drag against the film and potentially create scratches.

Again:

Scratch-resistant does not mean scratch-proof.

If something scratches the outside surface of the actual glass, it normally isn't physically scratching the window film attached to the opposite interior surface.

However, there's an interesting effect we've seen after tinting vehicles.

An existing scratch in the exterior glass can sometimes become more noticeable after window film is installed.

The darker the film, the more pronounced certain imperfections in the glass may appear.

That doesn't necessarily mean the tint caused the scratch.

The scratch may already be in the glass and simply becomes easier to notice after the appearance of the window changes.

We don't recommend putting adhesive-backed stickers directly onto window film unless there's a good reason to.

A static-cling item, such as certain oil-change reminder stickers, is different because it doesn't use a strong adhesive.

The problem with a normal adhesive sticker isn't only putting it on.

It's eventually getting it off.

You can remove the sticker and still have adhesive residue stuck to the film.

Now you may need another product or chemical to remove the residue without damaging the tint.

It's easier to avoid creating the problem in the first place.

If we've just tinted your full windshield, our recommendation is to wait at least four days before attaching something to the film.

That includes items such as:

• E-ZPass
• Dashcam
• GPS mount
• Suction-cup accessories
• Adhesive-mounted accessories

We want to give the windshield film time to properly set against the glass before attaching something directly to it.

This is separate from our normal roll-down-window instruction.

For roll-down side windows, Dope Tintings tells customers to wait 24 hours before rolling the windows down.

A windshield doesn't roll down, but we still don't want accessories attached to freshly installed windshield film immediately.

Do not use a razor blade against the tinted interior surface.

Remember where the film is located.

If you're scraping the inside of tinted glass with a razor or another sharp object, you can damage the actual film.

The same applies to abrasive pads and other sharp tools.

If something is stuck to your tinted glass and you're not sure how to remove it safely, ask the tint shop before attacking it with a blade.

Yes.

Because automotive window film is installed on the inside, that's also where the film is removed.

Side-window tint removal can be relatively straightforward in some situations.

The rear window deserves much more caution.

Many rear windows have defroster lines on the same interior surface where the tint is installed.

Someone who doesn't know what they're doing can potentially damage those lines while attempting to remove old film.

That's why we're especially cautious about DIY rear-window tint removal.

And give freshly installed film the appropriate time before attaching accessories.
