No, the exterior color of a vehicle does not necessarily make its window tint look darker. We compared a blue 2021 Audi Q5 and a white 2018 Audi Q5 after installing 20% tint on the two front windows of both vehicles at our Pennsauken, NJ shop.

Both Q5s belonged to the same vehicle generation, had black interiors and were photographed outside under similar daylight conditions. Despite the major difference in exterior color, we did not see the blue or white paint make either 20% installation appear noticeably darker.

Customers regularly tell us that their vehicle’s exterior color will make its window tint appear darker. We hear this from customers with black, white, blue, red and nearly every other paint color.

Based on more than 20 years of tinting vehicles, we have not found exterior paint color to be a reliable factor in how dark window tint appears. Paint color can change the vehicle’s overall styling and the amount of visual contrast surrounding the windows, but that is different from making the tint itself darker.

These two Audi Q5s provided an excellent real-world comparison because both vehicles had:

• Black interiors
• The same basic body and glass design
• Factory privacy glass on the rear section
• 20% film installed on the two front roll-down windows
• No additional fixed windows beside the side mirrors
• Photographs taken outside under similar daylight conditions

The most obvious difference between the two vehicles was the exterior paint. One Q5 was blue, while the other was white. When we compared the completed installations, neither exterior color caused the 20% film to appear meaningfully darker than the other.

The blue 2021 Audi Q5 received 20% Carbon film on its two front windows. The customer wanted the front windows to match the factory rear glass while also receiving better heat rejection for herself and her husband.

The white 2018 Audi Q5 received 20% Standard film on the same two-front-window configuration. This customer’s primary goal was matching the front windows to the factory rear glass with our least expensive regular film package.

In our experience tinting this generation of Audi Q5, the factory rear privacy glass has been very consistent in its approximate darkness. On both of these vehicles, 20% created an extremely close visual match between the newly tinted front windows and the factory rear glass.

From the outside, both installations produced a dark and coordinated appearance. Depending on the viewing angle, someone inside could either be partially identified or appear primarily as a silhouette. Neither vehicle appeared completely blacked out from every direction.

The white exterior created more visible contrast around the dark glass, while the blue paint produced a darker overall color combination. However, that styling difference did not make the actual 20% front tint look darker on one Q5 than the other.

The customers selected different film packages because they had different performance and budget priorities, not because Carbon 20% was intended to look darker than Standard 20%.

The blue Q5 customer selected Carbon because she wanted additional heat rejection. The white Q5 customer was mainly interested in the factory-matched appearance and selected Standard because it was the least expensive regular package available for the two front windows.

Both customers were happy when they saw their completed vehicles. The newly tinted front windows closely matched the rear privacy glass and completed the appearance of each Q5.

The interior and the amount of light entering the cabin have a much greater effect on the visible appearance of window tint than the exterior paint.

Both Audi Q5s had black interiors, which helped create the darker, silhouette-like appearance shown in the photographs. A comparable Q5 with a light tan, beige or gray interior could appear more visible through the same 20% film.

Several conditions can change how dark the windows appear from outside:

• Interior color: A dark interior absorbs more visible light, while a lighter interior is usually easier to see through tinted glass.
• Viewing angle: One angle may reveal part of the cabin, while another produces a dark reflection.
• Sun position: Direct sunlight can illuminate the interior or reflect from the exterior surface of the glass.
• Windshield light: An untreated windshield allows light to enter the front of the cabin, making occupants easier to see from certain angles.
• Panoramic-roof position: An open panoramic-roof shade allows additional light to enter from above.
• Surrounding reflections: Buildings, clouds, trees and the sky can make the same window appear darker or more reflective in different photographs.

This is why the same tinted window can look different as someone walks around the vehicle. It is also why one photograph should not be treated as a guarantee of how a tint percentage will appear under every lighting condition.

This comparison did not involve two random vehicles with completely different interiors and window designs. These were two Audi Q5s from the same generation, both with black interiors and the same 20% front-window percentage.

The exterior colors changed the overall appearance and contrast of the vehicles, but we did not observe the white or blue paint making the film itself appear darker.
