Carbon window tint does not automatically look darker or better than Standard window tint when both films are the same percentage. We demonstrated this by installing 20% Standard film on the two front windows of a white 2018 Audi Q5 and 20% Carbon film on the same windows of a blue 2021 Audi Q5.

Both Q5s had black interiors, factory rear privacy glass and the same basic window design. When we compared the completed installations at our Pennsauken, NJ shop, we did not observe a meaningful difference in darkness, color tone, reflectivity, clarity or overall appearance.

No. On these two Audi Q5s, the 20% Carbon film did not look darker than the 20% Standard film.

The white 2018 Audi Q5 received 20% Standard film on its two front roll-down windows. The blue 2021 Audi Q5 received 20% Carbon film on the same two-window configuration.

Both films created an extremely close visual match with the Audi factory rear privacy glass. Depending on the sunlight and viewing angle, someone inside either appeared as a silhouette or became partially identifiable through the front windows.

The Carbon film did not create additional darkness simply because it was Carbon. The percentage was responsible for the approximate darkness, while the film package determined the level of performance the customer purchased.

This is why we tell customers to treat film percentage and film technology as two different decisions:

If someone wants the appearance of 20% tint but does not care about heat rejection, Standard can accomplish that goal. If the customer wants the same approximate darkness with improved heat rejection, Carbon becomes the better package.

We also used these same two Q5s to answer whether exterior car color makes window tint look darker. Despite one vehicle being white and the other blue, exterior paint did not create a meaningful difference in the visible darkness of the two front-window installations.

Not automatically.

Some customers have heard that Standard film looks cheap, cloudy or unfinished compared with Carbon or Ceramic film. That was not what we observed on these two Audi Q5s.

When we compared the completed windows, we did not see a meaningful difference in:

• Color tone
• Reflectivity
• Clarity
• Darkness
• Overall exterior appearance
• How closely the front windows matched the factory rear glass

Both installations looked clean and professionally finished. Someone viewing the vehicles from outside would not be able to reliably identify which Q5 had Carbon and which had Standard based only on the appearance of the closed windows.

An important detail is that Dope Tintings uses coordinated films from the same manufacturer. That allows the color and appearance of our different film packages to remain consistent.

This does not mean every Standard and Carbon film produced by every manufacturer will look identical. Different manufacturers, including SunTek, XPEL and LLumar, can have different colors, tones, reflectivity levels and optical characteristics.

A Standard film from one manufacturer may look different from a Carbon film made by another manufacturer. That does not prove that Carbon is automatically darker or better-looking. It means two different products from two different manufacturers are being compared.

Film quality and installation quality also matter. A poorly manufactured or poorly installed film can look bad regardless of whether someone labels it Standard, Carbon or Ceramic.

On these actual Q5s, our professionally installed Standard film looked just as clean and attractive as our Carbon film. The Carbon upgrade was about improved heat rejection, not correcting an appearance problem with the Standard package.

The primary performance reason to upgrade from our Standard film to Carbon is improved heat rejection.

Our Standard package is intended for customers mainly interested in:

• Window darkness
• Privacy
• Appearance
• Matching factory rear glass
• A professionally installed film with a lifetime warranty

The white Q5 customer primarily wanted the two front windows to match the rear glass at the lowest regular package price. She was not looking for upgraded heat rejection, so 20% Standard was the appropriate choice.

Our Carbon package is intended for customers who want:

• The same available tint percentages
• Improved heat rejection
• Increased passenger comfort
• Better solar performance without paying Ceramic pricing
• A lifetime-warranty film

The blue Q5 customer wanted the same 20% factory-matched appearance, but she also wanted better heat rejection for herself and her husband. That made Carbon the more appropriate package for her needs.

There is also a top-edge distinction between the packages. Our Carbon roll-down windows receive an edge-to-edge finish, while the Standard film may not extend completely to the very top edge of the glass. This difference is most noticeable when the window is partially lowered. With the windows closed, both Q5 installations produced a clean and coordinated exterior appearance.

Both packages carry a lifetime warranty and provide comparable color stability within the films we install. The customer is not paying more because Standard is supposed to look bad. The Carbon customer is paying for additional film performance and the upgraded edge finish.
